I received my copy today and generally liked what I saw. The mentioning of Hiventy made me fear the worst in regards to the color grade and encode as Studiocanal seemingly make their restoration parties deal with the encoding as well.
The UHD is a UHD-100 with the film on it in DV and the interview with N.T. Binh (in French and only subtitled in German if you select German in the menu screen). The color grade looks fantastic with rich, deep colors, depth and detail and no trace of an obvious lab tint or raised blacks. This is one of the best grades to come out of France and hopefully more to follow like this. No mentioning whether Kusturica supervised it or what they based their grade on. The encode is surprisingly good but not perfect. I’m 100% sure this would’ve turned into an autopilot disaster encode one or two years ago á la Le cercle rouge. Except for the brightest of highlights, the encode is solid and from what I saw nothing stood out too negatively. Highlights don’t resolve as good, however the gradations from normal grain to a highlight where grain disappears (often when the sun is seen) are less drastic and less visibly attention-grabbing than on other encodes. I have a feeling that this partially is due to the bitrates being optimized a bit better. With Le cercle rouge, bitrates would go from 100+ MBs to single digits within seconds and in here, it’s mostly from 70-80 to 25-30 at the lowest from what I’ve seen. This should make a generally seamless experience, however I need to emphasize that this specifically applies to DV. In HDR10, things aren’t as perfect although the encode holds together surprisingly well and doesn’t look too much different on first glance. The elephant in the room is chroma noise though, which doesn’t look good in HDR if you’re aware of this and notice it in motion. If not, don’t worry, the film should look just fine for you. In DV, it’s better but not 100% perfect either. Nothing that ruins my experience though. It could have been a lot worse, no question. Can’t report anything about the audio other than that it sounds nice and dynamic. They’ve restored the audio from the original tracks. If the UHD is unlocked, I’ll try and make some caps later today. |

There’s no slip cover with any of the currently available UHDs. The German one is a Scanavo case and the French one a digipack. The Eagle looks like it has a slip which will likely be limited to 1000 copies but these usually take a while to sell out.

What's the original audio of this? The English is 5.1, and I'm wondering if it's supposed to be stereo. However I go from IMDB to see "Sound mix: Dolby * LC-Concept Digital Sound * Dolby SR"...
Dolby is too vague. Dolby SR is noise reduction? But "LC-Concept Digital Sound"... https://mkpe.com/publications/d-cine...ltichannel.php "More formats were soon to follow. In late 1991, L.C. Concept became the first system to commercially employ digital sound-on-disk. The soundtrack was placed on 2 x 5.25-inch rewritable magneto-optical disks manufactured by Sony. The 2 disks were capable of storing 300MB of data each, providing up to 3 hours of multichannel audio. The 4 or 5.1 discrete channels were compressed with the MUSICAM-algorithm (Masking Pattern Universal Subband Integrated Coding and Multiplexing). A standard SMPTE time-code track was recorded alongside the analog soundtrack, by which the disks were synchronized. The L.C. Concept format, developed by French Elisabeth Lochen and Pascal Chedeville, was first demonstrated in 1991 with a experimental re-release of the 1990 film Cyrano de Bergerac. The first commercial release was in late 1991 with Bis ans Ende der Welt, only in France. In 1994 the system was modified for use with CD-ROMs instead of magneto-optical disks, but it was never put to use commercially. The system had no technical drawbacks (unlike CDS), but the L.C. Concept company failed in 1994 due to a lack of funding. In total, about 30 films were released with L.C. Concept soundtracks, including Cliffhanger, Basic Instinct, Between Heaven and Earth, Bitter Moon, and The Lover." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.C._Concept "LC Concept was a 35 mm film projection sound format, developed in France and released in 1991. It used 5.25" 300 megabyte capacity re-writable magneto-optical disks to hold 4 or 5.1 channels of MUSICAM compressed audio. Two disks were used to hold approximately three hours of sound. The system was adopted in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. A large litigation against Universal Studios, Steven Spielberg and DTS frightened the investors. DTS had to buy the LC patents to resolve the issue.[1] The system was developed by Pascal Chedeville and Élisabeth Lochen. A standard SMPTE timecode printed next to analogue soundtrack on the film print was read by a reader connected to the playback unit kept the playback in sync. The system was tested with a re-release of the Cyrano de Bergerac, and the first commercial release was Until the End of the World.[2] Overall, around 30 features were released in this format in France, among which: Basic Instinct, Free Willy, Falling Down, Cliffhanger, Backbeat, Silent Tongue, Boiling Point, Heaven and Earth, Cyrano de Bergerac, L.627, The Lover, Until the End of the World, The Accompanist, IP5: L'île aux pachydermes, All the World's Mornings, Arizona Dream, La Belle Histoire, Bitter Moon. The company folded in 1994 due to a lack of funding.[2] Pascal Chedeville received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 1995.[3] " Anyone know how many channels this originally had? According to LDDB, all of the LDs were Dolby Surround LCRS. Last edited by Brian81; 07-21-2024 at 04:07 PM. |
