Default Bad company (1972) - fun city edition - 8/6/24

bad+company+slipcover+front.jpg

Bad Company Blu-ray (Limited Edition Slipcover)
$30.00
This strictly limited slipcover is exclusive to the FCE website. This tale of friendship and survival set in the 1860s focuses on a roguish group of runaways living by their wits and instincts. Two of them are complimentary opposites: Drew (Barry Brown), a good boy from God-fearing stock, out west to evade the draft. Jake (Jeff Bridges), a scruffy scoundrel. They encounter rebels and miscreants and their journey makes them older and wiser beyond their years. Written by Robert Benton and David Newman (BONNIE AND CLYDE) and directed by Benton (KRAMER VS. KRAMER). STREET DATE 8/6/24.

Can't believe I've never heard of this, but I think I will need to own it. Benton and Bridges sounds like a winning combo.

I really like the minimalist artwork on this. Striking in its simplicity, much like the artwork for another of their recent Paramount acquisitions, T.R. Baskin.

I've never seen this but based on the write-up and FCE's good record I'm exited to give it a go.

The timing of this release is eerie. The other major film that Barry Sullivan made, Daisy Miller (1974) was released on Blu Ray a couple of weeks ago on Blu Ray - great film by the way.

Now Bad Company (1972) coming in which Barry Sullivan co-stars with Jeff Bridges.

Barry Sullivan never made many films and these are easily his two best - he sadly committed suicide in 1978 by gun-shot. He was a fine magnetic actor - American cinema lost a great actor.

As I noted in the site announcement post, screened Bad Company in the theater back in the day and given the story and related casting (which is absolutely terrific), it really struck a chord for a young boy. Don't want to oversell the film, but it's a supremely honest and entertaining take on boyhood and the West.

Own this title via digital (Apple) which is from a very dated master where little if any work had been done other than an upscale to HD, so here's hoping some degree of digital clean-up/restoration has been done. Even without any work, it's a worthy addition to any library, if for nothing else than the scene featuring Jim Davis and David Huddleston. Classic!

Hmm, interesting to see FCE making the slipcover exclusive to their website. Don't think they've done that before. Guess that means I'll be paying a bit more for these now.

Great to see this is finally getting released.

Watched it a number of times as a kid and it's a film that's always stuck with me – an unromanticised and stark narrative but one with some enjoyable moments of humour along the way.

The 70s were such a rich decade for Westerns with gems like this one.

Hope and sometimes you shall receive along with the non-site exclusive non-slip original artwork shared by OrbitDVD:

This tale of friendship and survival set during the days of the 1860s focuses on a roguish group of runaways living by their wits and natural instincts. Two of them in particular are complimentary opposites: Drew (Barry Brown, Daisy Miller) is a good boy from God-fearing stock in Ohio, out west to evade the draft. Jake (Jeff Bridges, Rancho Deluxe) is a scruffy scoundrel--a saddle tramp not above a little larceny here and there. Along the trail they encounter a variety of varmints and renegades. And eventually, they find themselves--older and wiser for the journey and friendship. Sensitively and realistically filmed. Years before their famous pairing as the two Jeff Lebowskis in The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges and David Huddleston were adversaries in Robert Benton's "acid western" Bad Company. Co-starring alongside Bridges, Huddleston and Brown are Jim Davis (TV's Dallas), John Savage (The Deer Hunter), Jerry Houser (Slap Shot), Geoffrey Lewis (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot) and Ed Lauter (The Last American Hero). The screenplay is by Benton and David Newman, who earlier collaborated on Bonnie and Clyde. Shot on location in Kansas by famed cinematographer Gordon Willis (the Godfather films), the film has been restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative and comes to Blu-ray for the first time.

You mean Barry Brown. He also wrote an article on Jeff Bridges for Danny Peary's Cult Movie Stars, and an article called "Lugosi's Tragic Addiction" for Castle of Frankenstein.

This is a great film. Time to finally retire that 2002 DVD.

Thanks for the correction.

I have Danny Peary's book (actually I own all his of Peary's books relating to film). However the Barry Brown piece on Jeff Bridges was for the book Close-Ups: The Movie Star Book which Danny Peary edited and was published in the late 1970s.

Danny Peary's Cult Movie Stars wasn't published until the very early 1990s and whilst Jeff Bridges was also featured in that book as well, Danny Peary wrote all the entries for Cult Movie Stars, where as Close-up: The Movie Star Book had contributions from a wide range of people.

I had to pull the books out to check as my memory is not that good.

I read the book that his brother James wrote about their family called The Los Angeles Diaries. Very tragic. Their sister Marilyn also committed suicide in 1998.
