I really prefer the way ads are done on my Peacock freebie subscription when it's 3 minutes before with a timer. I play the ads to no one while getting things ready and it's like no ads at all.

I think this is only done for the newest things though and catalog things get ad breaks. (Not sure about this... I do know Chucky has ad breaks like it's on cable or broadcast TV. )

And then there's the absolute free online movies like Tubi. I don't really care how annoying ads are when the programing is completely free. ATV4K now features a mute button. Tubi and Pluto are more like broadcast UHF TV. My library based streaming movie service (Kanopy) is ad free but the content AV quality is sort of low.

It's easier these days to take money than to make money. Maybe that's always been the case.

My concern is new movies when disc is no more in the future. I couldn’t deal with ads once the films start. Also, it’s going to cost a fortune to go ad free in the future.

In other news, Netflix are supposedly pondering a completely free service with ads for certain markets to boost their ad audiences. Japan and Germany are two countries that have been mentioned. This will not be available in USA where the market is already saturated.

I’m guessing if this was to become reality, we would be talking a paired down offering, maybe with SD rather than full HD. That’s just my speculation though.

The best news is that after weeks of testing, and months of waiting, I was accepted into a new investigational drug trial. I am one of only 1000 people that will be participating in this trial.

The drug is tentatively called ALXN2220 and it is an "anti-body" drug that aims to remove amyloid deposits in the heart in the hopes that doing so will allow the heart to recover to some extent thereby improving and prolonging life.

It will be an IV infusion done every four weeks in addition to my other treatments. However, one-third of participants will receive a placebo instead of the investigational drug. Even so, this drug trial is an incredible opportunity. At the minimum, I will be helping with much needed research of this rare and fatal disease and at most I could benefit greatly from it.

Currently, there are no treatments that remove amyloid from the heart; that's what makes this new drug trial so exciting. All other treatments, short of a heart transplant, only slow the progression of this disease.

The trial begins for me in the second week of July. For now, I get a rare respite for 12 days until my next round of appointments. I will probably sleep for half of it.

I decided to go the big summer movie route over the weekend and went to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. I think I made the right choices because Kingdom was amazing and might be my favorite of the new series. Will have have to give it a rewatch to be sure. And Bad Boys was just dumb summer fun. Truly a blast.

I also rented In the Land of Saints and Sinners on Fandango at Home. Excellent movie and one I will certainly be adding to my collection. Also finally caught The First Omen. Much better than it had any right to be. Very much enjoyed it.

So all in all a great week for movies. Now back to the grind.

don't know why it is depressing. Taking a bit of time to get to pofitable smetimes it makes sense, but at some point in time you need to shift to profitability. You don't need to be psychic to know where it is headed.

bhampton didn't even quite the harshest part of the article.

There seemed to be broad agreement on most of the big themes: More ads, higher prices, and fewer big swings on prestige TV.

There might be some parts of the world where there is place for real growth for streaming but here I think people are more or less fixed in what they want (the people that wanted physical media stuck with it and the people that wanted streaming moved to streaming.

people have choices. yes prices will keep on increasing and maybe at the individual level a time might happen when the person says "it is not worth the price difference i will switch to the cheaper with ad tier or the cheaper a lot of ads tier", but it might always be at the individual level. I have not seen any provider yet drop the ad free choice. And at some point the ad revenue will start collapsing (let's face it there is a lot of places for ad placements be it straming, web sites, streaming....)

What I was getting at is where is the film access once disc breathes its last breath? Will premium exclusives still exist, will any movies be free of ads?

I know what you were getting at. IMHO

1) there is no reason to believe that there will be a day when there is no more physical media (the same way there is no reason to believe there will come a day with no records, people for the most part have chosen what they prefer).

2)I can't see why there won't be a streamer out there that won't offer a premium service without ads. There will always be people that will be willing to pay for such a service.

The ad free service must exist in order for the ad supported service to be cheaper ! .... ha ha ha ..... ugh.

Finally got around to watching Bullet Train 4K this evening. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It looked and sounded great too. Can’t remember who recommended it, I seem to think it was one of Ender, Gotmule or Cheez!

It's a fun movie and the 4K is stellar. Saw in theaters in Dolby Cinema, as well.

Bullet Train was a lot of fun. I saw it in theaters and have the 4K but haven't watched the disc yet.

This is a good movie and awesome 4K disc. It's not the typical Michael Bay hyper kinetic style of editing he's known for. You can actually see what's going on.

I just ordered a new TV from Value Electronics! Robert Zohn was extremely helpful and an all around pleasure to do business with.

I bought the new 85" Sony Bravia 9 with their VIP calibration service. I have never owned a professionally calibrated TV before, so I am excited to see my new TV perform at its best.

This will replace my 85" Sony X900F, which I have owned for five years. It still works just fine and I will be giving it away to one of my friends.

Watching movies is among my most favorite things to do and I am hoping that this new TV will take my enjoyment to new heights.
