Default Logan’s Run-the perfect idea for an extra for a 50th anniversary edition

I just rewatched it today and Logan and Jessica discuss various things about growing old together.

For an extra for the 50th anniversary edition it would be the coolest thing in the world to have Michael York and Jenny Agutter film a brief scene together as Logan and Jessica as an old couple that have been together for 50 years.

2026 will be 50 years.

The powers at be have both my permission and my blessing to take this idea and run with it.

Please do this!

Didn't realize it was 50 years for it. Always seemed like a film ahead of its time.

Agree. And great time to see a nice new UHD remaster, with all the deleted scenes included as extras.

The remake was supposed to begin filming earlier this year but there's been no update, funny how I was also just thinking about it earlier today. This and The Time Machine (1960) occupy my brain as a perfect double feature.

I dont want a "remake".

I want a trilogy like the books and reveal where the real Sanctuary is.
I want the build-up to the youth revolution and the domed cities.

The books have some cool mythology and action, and we now have the tech to flesh out the books (and even reference the tV series).

That would probably play better as a mini-series. I’m not sure who owns the rights to the books any longer (Saul David had an option on the sequel novel as well back in the day with an interest in doing a sequel. That, instead, turned into the TV series which essentially revisited the first novel and with David forced out by the studio as I recall). The TV series is pretty good for what it is though creating a pilot that essentially revisited the first film (remaking it essentially) was an interesting if odd choice. I can see why they did it as the film had a conclusion that would not have lend itself well to a series but it would have been far more interesting to adapt Nolan’s ideas for the sequels especially given that he was involved in the original pilot.

Mike Bays The Island is sort of a remake of this and a damned good one. Quite under rated, IMO. I remember the original, sort of. Might watch it again. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. Jenny Agutter was a babe.

Would it not need to be a remake to match the first book?

I remember when the remake was supposedly w/ Gosling staring and Refn Directing. This was talked about before Only God Forgives comes out.

The idea of a remake would be remaking the film, which does not reflect the first book. The books are a trilogy.
In the film the domes explode and they make it seem like society discovers that growing old is a good thing...(Sanctuary).

Thats NOT the first book.

That is what I am saying, you said you did not want a remake. It would have to be a remake though right. You cannot do a sequel to the first movie based on the books. Sorry if I am misunderstanding what you are saying.

If they stick closer to the trilogy, whether its a Film Trilogy or streaming series, it wouldn't be a RE-make of the 70's film.
I don't think they should try to re-do the film.....or try to squeeze out a sequel of the 70's film since it was "resolved" at the end.

Run....World.....Search....Run is just the beginning.

This new Gunn Superman is not a RE-Make of Superman 78.

The Planet of the Apes...(all versions) have yet to reference the original French book where Apes are living in a futuristic cities with jet packs on.

I was surprised (and delighted as a 16 year old) that they had nude shots of Agutter that got approved with a PG rating.

It seems to me it's a damn transporter device and the mind boggles that they are that advanced tech-wise.
It’s like a transporter.

On their "last day" the folks are expected to show up for carousel so they can hopefully be "renewed". In deleted scenes the alterative if you don't renew is called "flaming out" -- i.e. dying. We see the group in the beginning rise up and the crowd cheers them on shouting "renew". All the folks explode into sparks and the crowd smiles and cheers.

1. Are they exploding and are their bodies blown to pieces or are they disintegrating into nothing?

2. They say "hope for renewal" is what you should do, but ALL the folks exploded into sparks so did the crowd think they ALL renewed or did they think they ALL "flamed out" since there was only one outcome shown?

3. The ones that they think are renewed..... do they think their minds/souls are being placed into the bodies of the little babies we see at the beginning? Is that comforting coming back with zero memory of the life you lived? That is, in effect, death for the personality you had in your 30 years in the city.

Then there is the weird fate of the missing "runners"
The computer tells Logan that there are 1056 missing runners and he replies that maybe they were renewed. Huh?
To be renewed you have to show up for the carousel ceremony. The computer would know whether the person showed up since they have a life clock.
Is he assuming the computer is so flawed that it doesn't know if over a 1000 folks showed up at the ceremony or not...
Then when the computer says the number is correct, he states, "Nobody ever renews!!!". What?....why would the fate of missing runners make him question if the carousel ceremony is legit. It makes no sense. Being told that some runners somehow got away has nothing to do with whether the ones who do show up for the ceremony are renewed.

I understand the writers wanted Logan to question the whole system, but his leaps of illogic make no sense....why question renewal when he should only question the efficiency of them not being able to catch all the runners.

Anyone ever had these thoughts or have ideas on what is going on?

I still love the movie though.
1. They don’t explode into bits as I recall. Their chests explode. I seem to recall that the bodies are recycled though I don’t remember where I read that or perhaps I came to that conclusion since it’s a closed society.
2. The idea was that their souls were reborn into youngster’s bodies hence “renewed” or being reborn. They had no idea if their memories would be in tact. They were just happy to be reborn.
As to the runners…

Some of these things make a little more sense with David Zelig Goodman’s revised April 1975 revision. As I recall, there is more dialogue that was cut that would have clarified some of the issues. I have read it in a while but I seem to recall more dialogue that clarified things a bit. For those that didn’t Logan was struggling with the idea that runners had escaped and the fact that there is no renewal.

In the novel we did find out there was a real sanctuary and the second novel dealt with Logan living in Sanctuary and did return to the city. The third novel takes place in alternate universe that Logan travels to with the assistance of aliens.

I could be mis remembering the nude shot as I haven’t watched the film in a while but there was a bit of skin visible. For a 16 year old guy it was a big deal.

A future where you are killed off when you hit 30 is a great high concept and I'm amazed this movie hasn't been remade but with better visuals.
