Italy Perfect Blue 4K UHD (1997)

Confirmed by Yamato Video that they were working on a 4K Steelbook release for the movie but it will be published next year.

They are waiting for the Japanese 4K release first.

That is interesting.
Curious how much it could be improved upon the standard Blu-Ray.
Wasn't the master provided before not the best of quality?
Hopefully they (the Japanese Release) can go back to the original 16mm negative.

Perfect Blue was shot on 35mm, albeit intentionally on a very cheap, fast and grainy stock both for aesthetic and financial reasons. The existing master is quite dated, and the attempt to “improve it” that a French lab produced only worsened things.

As for this newer version, there’s zero information on the restoration work done. It looks to be a new scan of some film element at least, as despite the heavy grain reduction, you can see new information harvested by the new scan not present on the older BD. As for what element was used, again, impossible to know. Having heard multiple stories from different (trustworthy) people over the years about the state of the OCN, it’s hard to know what’s true and what isn’t.

God I hope it's good, keeping a very cautious optimism for it.
