Are there plans for Mill Creek o release this show on Bluray?
Also I noticed there are two box sets released, I wonder if the other one is a bootleg? The Mill Creek boxset: https://www.amazon.com/Renegade-Complete-Lorenzo-Lamas/dp/B003XMKU0M/ Bootleg? https://www.amazon.com/Renegade-Complete-Collection-Seasons-1-5/dp/B0B25SD2S4/ Last edited by Edenbeast; 10-08-2022 at 11:31 PM. |

Mill Creek had the rights years ago and released their DVD set, which was often found at Walmart and K-Mart.
VEI currently has the rights and released the latest set. There is no review information about the VEI set, so I can't say which one is better, but the MC set was their usual trash TV release, with several hours of episodic content crammed on a single disc and loose paper sleeves. The VEI set likely has better packaging and might have better video, though the tape masters for the show are of poor quality to begin with, so there's no hope for a good release until the show gets refreshed in HD. Extras are non-existent, likely because none were ever made or were worth including. The only thing you'll likely never see - unless someone gets their hands on it - is the series finale that was made to wrap up the Dixon/Raines story that began in the pilot and ended with Dixon on the run, in the final aired episode. Cannell - who also played bad cop Dixon - had a good sense to know that his series had run it's course and most likely wasn't getting picked up for another season, so he pumped out one last episode that wrapped everything up, but it has never been released to the public and it's not known if post-production on the episode had ever been completed. For years, it was thought that there was no resolution to the series and nobody involved had ever said otherwise because it likely never was discussed, but Lorenzo Lamas confessed that there was a final episode made by Cannell - not a written script to be filmed, but an actual filmed episode - before the production shut down. |

It's weird because while I missed most of the final season at the time I do recall the last episode ending with the roles reversed; Reno no longer on the run and now going after Dixon, who became a fugitive himself. I thought that was a great way to end the show, so I was surprised when I heard that Lamas revealed awhile back there had been an actual unaired episode that ended the series.

Cannell more or less owned and controlled the series production and it was sold en-masse via the syndication model in use at the time, meaning networks/affiliates around the world had to pay for it outright, getting whatever was available when they bought into the series. Unfortunately, this meant that the show was often, if not always, not broadcast in any logical order, so the scripts were written to be almost entirely stand-alone, except for the handful of the 110 episodes that did focus on the Dixon-Raines frame-up plot or had plots directly tied to earlier episodes. The final season was a network pick-up contract with USA Networks, which not only secured them the four previous seasons, but also exclusive broadcast rights to the fifth and final season, though the network more or less aired the show in random order like the previous syndication buy-ins did. The final episode mentioned in my post above apparently wasn't released because it would have not worked out with the random airing order of episodes that had always been used with the series broadcasters. Unfortunately, nobody had the sense to talk to Cannell about it and get it sorted out, as DVD was coming around when the show went off the air.

Poor Lorenzo Lamas lost all the money he made on Renegade and had to go around hawking the European Casual Pouch dot com.

There is not any available disc or streaming source for Renegade where the PQ would be considered "acceptable". It's just bad all around. The only way you're going to get a good picture is if new transfers are made from the master tapes or some company ponies up the cash to have the series remastered in HD from the surviving production elements, if they are even available.

Shout has rights to the SJC catalog, but haven't done much with it and the quality of what you find on streaming isn't likely to be much better than what's on DVD. My advice is to just bite the bullet and get the VEI set. As for Highlander, nothing will move forward with releasing the TV show until the new Lionsgate movie is ready to be released or has been released/hits home video, so you are looking at another two-year wait, most likely.
