Really good thread to say goodbye. I was never much of a renter but sure spent on the used blus. Counted 89 of the RB box cases I still have and know there were more that I purchased. Gave me the opportunity to purchase several movies I would never pay full price for but given the chance at $5.99 or less I was very happy.

Deadline just reported CSftSE employees didn't get their latest paycheck and had their health care terminated a month ago, throw the damn towel already.

A local box by me has no rentals anymore and doesn't allow returns. It does have a lot of movies for sale, most of which are $3.99. Nothing cheaper than that.

If they start blowing movies out for $1 or $2, I'm in.

Nothing here in the Hoosier state either. Will be keeping an eye open on deals at Dollar General for those used blus in the paper slips. Any other business out there that sells blus without the cases and artwork?

Here's an interesting article about what happened to Redbox:

https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/5/24...bankruptcy-why

Fascinating and a little sad to see this dinosaur going down. I haven't really used them in years though (except to buy a couple UHDs when they were selling them for a few bucks).

I had no idea they were still Tweeting. Very odd, since they stopped any e-mails months ago. They should have been sending out coupons or even free rentals to generate traffic to the kiosks and then maybe people would pay to rent another movie or buy one. Did they fire all the people who were involved in making the e-mails months ago? I don't know how they generate unique codes for people, but I guess they could have used universal codes like JULYTHEFOURTH or something (no idea how many characters they need just an example).

Many of the kiosks are no longer functional. The closest one for me is outside a 7/11. They have unplugged the kiosk at some point, so it's just sitting there collecting dust. According to the article I linked above stores like these were getting a share of the revenue. When the money stops coming they just unplug them.

At this point, these Kiosks will just be put in a middle of nowhere just for nature over growth to consume them.

It does make me wonder though for those who bought their VODs, where they will all eventually go. Maybe all transfer to Fandango.

Default Hmm, no locations here…yet.

No locations at all on the "Redbox locations, Browse A Kiosk Near You" map. Wish they had done a product dump. Oh well. A while ago I did get some Disney titles for $1. Counting myself lucky.

And that in itself is sad. They really did have a chance to make some quick cash if they would have sold their used stock. Maybe some how that was not allowed or likely they just did not have their act together.

Sadly I have replaced many of my used blus for 4ks and have stacks of the Redbox movies I have a hard time getting rid of without Blu cases and original artwork. What's too bad is the Redbox snappers actually would be a better way to ship movies to prevent damage.

Two redbox kiosks by me are still fully operational for renting and buying discs.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some contractual detail that didn't allow them to significantly discount some movies as it would compete against the studios product too aggressively and Redbox really didn't need another lawsuit against them. Similar how Walmart kiosks do not sell movies and only rent.

As for old Blu-rays from kiosks, if you have access to get custom covers and extra cases, that may help to sell some. You won't really make much more but at least they can be easier to sell than disc only. You may need to aggressive sell a bunch together for super cheap... as in like 50¢ or less in bulk to move it if you really don't need them. I still have a 1080p TV in my great room so I keep all my 1080p discs.

Which retailers are they? My local Krogers pulled the plug but I haven't gotten a change to visit one close by me which is a Dollar General.

I wonder if now they'll put the remaining movies for sale.

Yes, I would expect through liquidators.
