I still don't see the point of making let alone investing money in this after the Zack Snyder film and the motion comic.

I'd much rather have a "DC Showcase" style of animated short films wrapping up the remaining loose ends from the Arrowverse/Earth-Prime. I need that in my life...

I think the new trailer looks pretty good. I see the back cover lists some actors in the credit block. Hadn't seen anyone announced before. Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff, and Titus Welliver. I'm thinking that's Rhys as Dan and Welliver as Rorschach?

Looks like the Telltale games. (The Wolf Among Us, Walking Dead, etc...)
Would have been cool if it had of been.

WATCHMEN CHAPTER I
Part 1 of a Two-Part Animated Movie Event Brings DC Comics' Acclaimed Series to Life
Available exclusively on Digital on August 13
4K UHD and Blu-ray arriving on August 27
Watchmen Chapter II to debut later in 2024

BURBANK, CA (July 10, 2024) - Based on DC’s acclaimed graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen Chapter I, the first part of an all-new animated two-part feature film from Warner Bros. Animation and Paramount, will be released on Digital on August 13.

The animated feature is a faithful adaptation of the groundbreaking graphic novel series by writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons, which redefined the superhero genre when it debuted in the mid-1980s.

Watchmen Chapter I delves into the gritty and complex world of masked vigilantes in an alternate version of America during the Cold War era. The “Watchmen” saga remains a cornerstone of comic book literature, having garnered numerous awards and accolades over the decades.

The adaptation captures the spirit and style of Moore and Gibbons’ original, groundbreaking vision with stunning animation that pays homage to the comic book’s iconic visual style. The film features a stellar voice cast that includes Matthew Rhys (TV’s “Brothers & Sisters,” “The Americans,” “Perry Mason”) Katee Sackhoff (TV’s “Battlestar Galactica,” “Longmire,” “The Mandalorian”) and Titus Welliver (TV’s “Lost,” “Deadwood,” “Sons of Anarchy”).

The film is produced and directed by Brandon Vietti from an adaptation by J. Michael Straczynski. Jim Krieg and Cindy Rago serve as producers and Dave Gibbons serves as consulting producer. Sam Register, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are executive producers.

Fans will also be able to enjoy a range of bonus features including interviews with the filmmakers including Dave Gibbons, J. Michael Straczynski, and more.

Watchmen Chapter I features all all-star voice cast including Matthew Rhys (Dan Dreiberg, Nite Owl), Katee Sackhoff (Laurie Juspeczyk, Silk Spectre) and Titus Welliver (Rorschach, Walter Kovacs), along with Troy Baker (Adrian Veidt, Ozymandias), Adrienne Barbeau (Sally Jupiter, Silk Spectre), Corey Burton (Captain Metropolis), Michael Cerveris (Jonathan Osterman, Dr. Manhattan), Jeffrey Combs (Edgar Jacobi, Moloch), Grey DeLisle, Kelly Hu, John Marshall Jones (Hooded Justice), Max Koch, Phil LaMarr, Yuri Lowenthal (Wally Weaver), Geoff Pierson (Hollis Mason, Nite Owl), Dwight Schultz, Jason Spisak, Kari Wahlgren (Janey Slater), and Rick D. Wasserman (Edward Blake, The Comedian).

Watchmen Chapter I will be available on August 13 to purchase digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and more. On August 27 the film will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Discs online and in-store at major retailers. Pre-order your copy now.

What’s that sound? Oh, it’s just Alan Moore banging his head against the wall.

That's a short run time to cover that book. Even without the Black Freighter stuff, isn't the Snyder movie over 3 hours?

Definitely will be waiting for reviews before buying.

Sorry, yes I knew that, I was thinking that even if both are 84 minutes, that's 168 minutes, or 2 hrs 48 minutes, which just feels a bit lean to me but again, I'll wait for the reviews.

If it's tight but fun (like the first X-Men movie), then it'll make a nice alternate version to watch when I want a quicker experience.

That's my thought as well. The theatrical cut of Snyder's film is about the same length; I prefer the director's cut, which is around 3 and a half hours (haven't seen the Ultimate Cut with Black Freighter worked into it). I figure, if you cut a little bit of the sex and gratuitous slo-mo from the theatrical cut, it would be around the same length as both these parts, give or take.

That said, I am interested (nervous?) to see what they cut or trim. I hope they keep some of the stuff the theatrical cut took out, like the Hollis Mason stuff. I'm sure they trimmed some of the Minutemen stuff like the movie did. I could definitely see them taking out some of the more uncomfortable stuff like most of Comedian's deplorable actions (Sally, Vietnam, etc). Even if they're important bits of his story and arc, I can see them being, at the very least, severely toned down for both the animation style and modern audiences. I think what I'm most interested to see is if they adapt the original ending disaster or go for something a little closer to the movie. I actually like both, but I think if they were ever going to adapt the comic ending, animation would be the way to do it.

Yeah, I'd bet real money that we're getting
[Show spoiler] the squid
at the end. This isn't getting a bigger cinematic push or anything, so no need to make it more "mainstream".

I’m sure they’ll use the graphic novel’s ending just like the HBO series showed parts of it.

It's not a 100% faithful adaptation. The twist regarding Hooded Justice's identity from the HBO series (which Alan Moore hated) is made canon in this which means they include some elements from the TV show.

Has Alan Moore stated he specifically hated the TV show, though? AFAIK he has completely given up on watching ANY adaptation of his work. He hates them all equally without having seen them. V...Snyder Watchmen...anything else...it's all the same to him.

Im also one that dont see the point of this unless they do the full book, chapters and all in animated form. The motion comic clocks in at 5 hours 26 minutes omitting the chapter epilogues, which is i want to see animated ; Under the Hood excerpts, Veidt industries documents & interviews, New Frontierman articles, Kovacs arrest-mental health reports etc.

So this is set in the Watchmen TV show adaptation continuity and retells the comic to fit those retcons?

That's super confusing.

He said in his own words that he despises it and believes it has the ruined the legacy of his comic.
