The most effective rental system I have seen for movies is for a consumer to buy a film used watch it and then sell it used as they can easily end up with negative prices. running a rental business though with how media is priced sounds nearly impossible for it to succeed. |

I never had these problems when Cable Systems had both IPTV and Internet. InfoWest checked my WiFi settings, and the Router is high and close to the TV. Fiber has a Solid Constant Connection, while WiFi Signal Strength has dips!

Good luck Vilya...
Bullet Train is the most Audio/Visually stunning disc I've seem in the last few years...It gets my vote for your first viewing.... Also, I always throw on THE INVISIBLE MAN to test out any changes I've made to my display... besides being a pretty good movie, the first 10 minutes are a bit of a torture test for how well a display handles black levels... it's a completely different movie depending on what you're playing it on. |

Still, I suspect that my 100 Mbps internet download speed will be close enough to stream 80 Mbps content and provide a far better A/V presentation than what we get with the anemic bitrates served up by most streaming sources. My actual internet speed averages about 96 Mbps. I should still be able to get a good idea of what streaming could be if the popular streaming services actually gave a damn about offering a truly premium viewing and listening experience. Sadly, I don't think that they will ever offer such quality. It has never been about achieving the best quality possible; it has ever only been about controlling costs and making the most money possible. Thank you for the Oppo suggestions, but I see no harm in experimenting. I can always revert to my previous settings. |

![]() What prices the rental stores sell their excess used stock for later on has very little bearing on what the studios earn from physical media. Obviously, people buying a used disc is a sale that the studios did not benefit from, but the used market has been a reality for most types of merchandise ever sold. At the least when someone buys a product it means that interest in that product still exists. Last edited by Vilya; 07-27-2024 at 12:28 AM. |

I added this out of print Olive label title today:
![]() Description: "A man who discovers that he hasn't much longer to live finds those around him too self-absorbed for support and enlists a mental patient to help him commit suicide." I find the dark humor to be delightfully in poor taste. ![]() [Show spoiler]

It is somewhat of a different example, but when Chad calibrated my JVC, he turned off any processing on my player and let the projector handle everything. I am of the mindset that your flagship Sony which has been calibrated as well will trump your Oppo.

Sometimes, I wish the internet didn’t exist. Read several demoralising articles this week about the future of film and tv. The one that stood out was from a script writer who can’t find work (it was a wrap article, hidden behind membership so can’t link it). She has three kids and they all no longer watch long form content of any kind. Her youngest son (seven) only ever watches YouTube shorts (tik tok rival) on her living room tv, the other two are glued to games.
She feels this is a harbinger for the future of the industry. She classes long form as old tv and tik tok, Youtube and gaming as the new version. Almost like long form is becoming old fashioned to the very young generation. As most of you know, this ties into my long term concerns about film and long form. I’m seeing more and more articles about social media and short form video stealing eyeballs from long form. I linked an article last month stating as much. My thought is that the more advertising dollars go towards tik tok or YouTube, the more the industry will follow the money, and films, long form streaming etc.. will become an ancient form. Even more concerning, tik tok/YouTube shorts used to be the domain of mostly the young, but stats from last year onwards slow a huge rise in over 40’s use. I always used to worry about disc surviving, but now it’s more a case of will long form storytelling even be here in 20 years? |

The internet only exists to the extent that you allow it to. If you are using it so much that it upsets you often, then cut back on it or maybe stop clicking on every clickbait article with a sensationalist headline.
You know already that I do not share any of your concern for this idea that short form content is imperiling long form content nor am I worried at all about 6" phone screens eliminating large screen TVs. In fact, I know of no one personally, or even on this forum, beyond you that worries about, or even imagines, these things happening. It's not going to happen. I said so, again, so put this silliness out of your head already. You have far more important and REAL matters to be concerned about. Enjoy who, and what, you have in your life today. That's what's real. ![]() |

The world seems quite content with low bit rate video as witnessed with the popularity Netflix were the average data rate is less than 5 Mbps. For those that watch movies via digital locker I would use Movies Anywhere. Did not include Google Play on my table but a check of 1917 showed a video data rate of just 5 Mbps in HD. Apparently they did not have the UHD version. The Microsoft movie app is not available on the ATV4K so I can not check their info. |
