I'm all for synergy, but the Wicked actresses in near-costume and the Minions segment was just a bit too much NBC Universal'y to me.

Who knew Dionysus/the festival of Dionysus was so "controversial."

too funny, we are literal opposites when it comes to track. youre a long distance runner if i remember correctly? which explains why you like the events you like... i was a sprinter and jumper, so the cream of the crop track even it obviously the 100m followed by the 400m and then i love the 200m, 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400

hoping to catch some javelin and hammer throw and stuff too. its all good stuff

Yeah middle and long distance are what interest me the most. Oddly my favorite athletes are from Europe. But if they were to lose then it's cool that a US athlete gets the gold.

The marathon interests me too but I think Kenyan/Ethiopian athletes have had too many positive PED tests and they always seem to win. So the event has a bit of a taint for me.

Frist?

To me, getting a medal at all is an enormous accomplishment. Olympic athletes are largely world class and train a lifetime to compete. Despite what people like my mother and my uncle believe, a rando rolling off the couch in their living room could not place at the Olympics.

It's purely a matter of opinion. I've always considered total medals to be by far the measure of most importance.

meh. then its really a numbers game... how many more athletes does USA have vs other countries etc...

number of gold is the..... gold standard....

been using the NBC app a bit on my tv and like how you can browse by event but why do they not have the full event available? its like 2-5 minutes highlights from the event. unless im missing something in the app

Egypt beat Spain in men's soccer 2-1. Are their young players really that good?

In any case, it makes next to no difference for the Summer Olympics. I believe in the past 40+ years the leading gold medal nation won the most overall medals at every Olympics except 2008. The huge bias host nations enjoy in Olympic games is most evident with gold medals, which largely explains how China won far fewer overall medals in 2008 than the US, but more golds. Another example is Japan coming in 3rd in gold medals in 2020, but 6th in total medals.

Comparing gold medals rather than overall medals seems less meaningful in the Winter Olympics, where the sample size is vastly smaller and we're talking about a bunch of countries winning the same 12-14'ish golds.
