Aquarion and the sequel Evol are 2 of my favorites. Both have a great eternal love story and over-the-top kick-ass mech action (even more so in Evol).

Personally, I consider the 1st series as a spiritual successor to GaoGaiGar, and it's unfortunate that Funimation never put it on blu-ray, even if it was just a cheap upscale. I do not recommend Logos, it is completely unrelated to either and not very interesting.

RahXephon is basically the same thing as Evangelion, but I thought it was much better (at least, when I watched it long ago. I plan on rewatching it soon).

Gasaraki
Gunparade March
Mazinkaiser & SKL
Space Runaway Ideon
Z-Mind (it's decent but unique)

I would disagree with your appraisal of Evangelion. RahXephon is very influenced by it and I think it’s good in its own right. However, It’s more of a hard sci-fi/fantasy that makes more sense from a plot perspective. Evangelion is more concerned with expressing ideas about alienation, depression and the difficultly of connecting with others. In that regard, it has a very satisfactory thematic payoff that is nicely complemented by End of Eva to fill in the literal ending.
