Gotta love all these different cuts, and restorations that have new footage nobody appeared to know about. Carry On Pickpocket went from Didi Pang's body double giving the audience a bit of light-hearted skin to almost poking out the cameraman's eyes!

Anyway, it's unfortunate that, once again, the labels had to stitch together a complete (?) original language track from less-than-ideal sources. (As I understand things, Vidi, the label that put out the Mandarin tape in Taiwan, always had tapes that were a bit rough.) I can't help but wonder if the original audio would've been found in the archives had enough searching been done. Oh well. Until some deep-pocketed benefactor comes along, this is about as good as it's going to get. Better something than nothing. Can't wait to see/hear the final results!

It was honestly shocking that it was an English dub that was found to match this cut and NOT the Mandarin track, hence our search to grab whatever elements we could find to compile it all without having to revert to English at any point, lol. Especially since any incarnation of the English dub previously only conformed to the shorter cut of the film.

I never expected to be able to watch this movie, especially its long version, in high quality. I thought that even if a Blu-ray were released, it would only include the shortened 79-minute version. I want to express my gratitude to everyone involved in the production of this Blu-ray.
By the way, the narrow alley where Jimmy was fighting in the long version's opening scene has remained almost unchanged, even after more than 50 years.

I watched A Man Called Tiger last night and really enjoyed it. I'm really glad they were able to pull together the longer cut as I can't imagine how chopped up the nearly 40 minute shorter film was. I honestly felt the longer cut was a good pace and made for a pretty decent film.

I've always been a pretty big Jimmy Wang Yu fan, so I'm glad this one of those films that really lets him shine, and hopefully many more of his films come out.

I'm always amazed as to how Brandon Bentley is able to put these films together when there are simply so many versions, but he's able to do it, so we should consider ourselves fortunate.

A stellar release.

I appreciate the kind words... certainly more kind than the main review on the front page 🙄 "Cutting Tiger, Hidden Subtitles (HD; 6:55) is a frankly kind of odd piece by Brandon Bentley... This could have used a bit more explanation, in my not so humble opinion. " I know it was admittedly a relatively last minute addition I threw together (not the same amount of time and archive elements I had to work with as I did with, say, "Not Quite Biggest Boss" for Arrow's Big Boss 4K), but damn. I thought it was pretty straightforward: "we discovered additional subtitle scripts missing in the film with audio blips confirming the cuts, here you go."

Oh well, the "risk to reward" ratio on some of my work has been going against my favor more often these days. I have another video essay (yes, this one will be more of a traditional video essay) related to Wang Yu that should hopefully be announced next month that'll hopefully be received a bit better.

I wouldn't let it bother you. Everyone has different opinions about everything, and I thought it was just fine which I'm sure others will as well. You do good work, and that matters at end of the day.

As a Wang Yu fan for me this is a great release,after only ever seeing the short version on the Shout DVD set this is a revelation. Any chance of Seaman No 7 & Tattooed Dragon ?

There's a ton of audio dropouts on the Mandarin track of the longer HK cut. Everything gets muffled and low during fight scenes throughout. I figured it was a limitation of the source but the audio is fine during the English dub, and it's just SFX. Feels like that could've been easily fixed for this release and while it wasn't a film ruining flaw, it was quite irritating and in general the audio levels were all over the place, had to to turn the volume up and down a lot. Loved the film though! I'm no audiophile so I never usually notice anything amiss but this was pretty glaring I thought.

Edit: I'm sleepy and did just read others talk about this. I didn't check every instance, but one scene in the third act is literally just body hit SFX and grunting, which is fine on the English track. Reading more about how truncated this film has been in the past brings a newfound appreciation for the lengthier version we have here though.
