I must admit until yesterday I was in the camp of "It is what it is!!". After the AVforums threw up their arms in disgust I went to a friend who is an AV legend and he went through it step by step.

He stated that the applied DNR and EE could be done by the user on their TV sets, as the TV's themselves have the ability to apply these EE and DNR algorithms to the image. He stated that if the studio add the effects, they are hardcoded to the print and therefore can never be taken away.

Therefore anyone who complains has the right to complain because the image grain has been tampered with and the end user can never get it back. If the image was just left alone, the user could just adjust their TV to get similar effects that you see on Gladiator.

Surely then, these digital cleaners (or whatever you call them) are surplus to requirements? I am not one to dictate, but it seems the more money you spend on your equipment the more right you have to complain.
