Australia Late Night with the Devil (Umbrella)

SOOOO now I have received my Umbrella CE, which I was going to sell, but I am instead thinking of returning/selling the Second Sight CE without even watching it.

AND HERE is why, let me know your thoughts on this.

First of all according to Umbrella, the directors wanted the film on Blu-ray as their format of choice, instead of 4K UHD; this also explains why this was released in Blu-ray in most places instead of 4K UHD. Umbrella could have put this on 4K UHD as they had been doing them for a while, but chose not to. Second, giving some weight to this, the streaming services like Vudu/Fandango aren't carrying a Dolby Vision grade, meaning the Second Sight HDR grade may be a home video label grade rather than a studio grade - and given the mixed mediums of the film, 1080p may offer more detail consistency than 4K does. Third, the Umbrella version *does* contain the Night Owls broadcast cut as a special feature on the disc (not just a VHS); this doesn't appear to be mentioned in Second Sights extras details.

I don't want two versions like this, its starting to sound like the Umbrella is likely the better release. And that doesn't even mention the artwork which Umbrella CE clearly wins.

So you prefer scenes with more detail to be downgraded to the least common denominator

I guess I can watch movies with 16mm inserts on PAL DVD now.

Well, it does make sense. Similar to films the filmmakers decide to finish in 2K for consistency because the SFX are in 2K even if the live action is filmed in 4K.

Anyway, Umbrella made the statement that the filmmakers preferred it on Blu-ray, not me - that would be a sensible reason why, and also would explain why there is no Dolby Vision grade in streaming I can find in the sites I use like Fandango which usually includes DV when provided by the studio. There is no technical reason holding back a 4K UHD as Umbrella has no problem releasing 4K UHD either HDR/SDR as they have released plenty of them for less popular films.

It's in the press release for the Umbrella version

Calling all Night Owls! The world-first release of Late Night With the Devil is here in collaboration with directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes and released on Blu-ray as their preferred format.
Also worth noting the physical and digital extras of the Umbrella release seem to imply a closer collaboration with the filmmakers for the release than the ones on the Second Sight, given the extra cut of the film and the book differences. Makes some sense given Aussie film.

Looking at streaming versions for services I have access to I don't see Dolby Vision offered when a 4K version is offered, and some streaming services I have access to only offer it in 1080p HD. Along with most physical releases being 1080p. Maybe they just preferred 1080p so there wasn't a huge resolution difference between segments.

That is typical press release speak doesn't really say anything. Preferred format, as opposed to what? That is not being clarified, and it certainly doesn't have to mean "preferred format over all others, including 4K UHD".

My guess is that the directors prefer a/any physical release over digital streaming. Who knows whether they even considered Blu-ray vs. 4K UHD.

I would refrain from interpreting anything more into this statement.

Well I am locked into the Second Sight release, too late to cancel with the retailer at this point, so I will continue to look into what the deal is with the preferred format statement

Also found a tweet from Umbrella indicating Blu-ray was the directors preferred format:
https://x.com/UmbrellaEnt/status/1785468894389698564

It is confirmed though that the Second Sight won't have the broadcast cut that the Umbrella release has, right?

Isn't that only on the VHS of the Night Owls Fan Club Edition?

No, that is why I got excited when I got the Umbrella CE in the mail. It's actually on the Blu-ray disc as a special feature. And I checked it out, and its quite cool! I can't imagine not getting this release without having this special feature TBH. I am pretty much decided on returning the Second Sight as a result; some occasional higher resolution black & white segments is not worth losing perhaps the best special feature you could have for this movie.

Oh nice, I didn't see it listed anywhere other than there. That's pretty cool. Still patiently waiting for the VHS tapes to get in so they can ship mine!

Here is a pic of the back of the CE with the special features, this is the boxed version without the VHS. Btw it is region free even though it says B. The disc is the same as the standard edition so even if you buy the cheap version it'll have the broadcast cut

Also, the rear of the CE has the same key art as the US steelbook if you are curious

So what is the night owls cut? Is it pretty much what you see in the movie without the behind the scenes bits? Or did they add commercials and stuff? That would be amazing if they made commercials for a true broadcast feel.

It was done quite well. It is 1hr 10min long.

There are no fake commercials inserted, but they did something similar for authenticity.

The whole thing plays as if it was actually a broadcast of the show, from beginning to end, and the fidelity, title cards, etc, all look legit. When there is a commercial, it says "we'll be right back" and cuts to authentic looking SMPTE bars with test tone and lettering, that you'd sometimes see on late night programs when there were no commercials to sell.

Overall its pretty great and TBH I could see some people preferring the broadcast cut to the regular cut.

Watched the Broadcast cut last night. It's a very good version of the movie, and one I see a lot of people may prefer due to some complaints in the theatrical cut where it cuts to stuff happening behind the stage. I do think it should have ended 5 minutes sooner, when
[Show spoiler]the girl kills everyone and Jack escapes backstage
, but I can see myself watching this from time to time. I do like the color bars in place of commercial breaks.

Damn, They had to make the Bohemian Grove VHS tape version black and white. They should have kept it in color and I know that cut is in color on the blu-ray but still that sucks.

I watched the Broadcast Cut on Monday and I have to say, it's a pretty cool cut. I love the original cut and everything but this is a nice addition when you just want to throw some horror on for a little bit or you have a date over.
