Default Mpeg4 to PS3

I did a search and came up with nothing, and also skimmed the tips/tricks post.

I'd like to play my mpeg4 files via thumbdrive on my ps3. Is there a recommended file converter or method? I tried a few and they always missed.

I tried sharing via my PC via this post, but it did not show the non-compatible files.

ps3video9

Or perhaps use one of the media servers such as PMS, which trancodes on the fly. Just go to the trancoded folder on your PS3 (via the media server) and COPY.

ps3video9 would be the best route if you want to copy them to your PS3, I wouldn't try and copy the transcoded files across since they will be huge.

Are the files showing up on your thumbdrive? Because sometimes MPEG4's don't show up at all. In such cases I believe using a media server is the only way.

Ok, I dont know if this works for everyone but I'm gonna tell you something.
I downloaded a bunch of videos off limewire and they were all avi files. Now according to the specifications, the PS3 isnt supposed to play avi. When i transfered the files over to the PS3, they worked but the PS3 recognized them as MPEG4. So i dont think you have to worry about converting them...as long as they are already avi or mpeg4. hope this helps

If they dont show up, make sure you press triangle when you have the thumbdrive highlighted and choose show all. this should show everything in the thumbdrive.

Whether the PS3 will play the file or not depends on the codecs that have been used.

It will recognise avi, mpeg4 etc etc as they are just container....but if the film uses a codec that is not recognised it will not play the file.

The films on the thumb drive will not show up under the movie section, unless it is in a folder called movies or if you press the triangle button and select display all.

If the film will not play you can either re-encode the film using ps3video9 or some other programme or stream it to the PS3 to be transcoded on the fly.

if you come across any mp4 files which dont work, google for "changing containers" when it comes to changing formats (not converting, just changing).

also, if you have any MKV files, you can change the container to m2ts, which is a sony format that the PS3 will play flawlessly.

Thanks for all the replies!

If I put the original Mpeg4 files on a thumb and do "display all," they come up as unsupported content. PS3 Video 9 worked to make the files compatible with the PS3 except the audio is terribly lagged. I am now searching for "changing containers." Thanks for the mention of the MKV files. I have a lot of those!

Install PS3 Media Server and use that to stream the files.

I mentioned that in my first post. Seems this guy wants to do it his own way.

After having PMS installed, you shouldn't really get any incompatible files ever again.

Best PS3 media application.
I use since last November but there is no problem at all.
It can play everything AVI, MKV, subtitle file and even DVD in your computer drive.
I got few import DVD ( PS3 can not play), I can watch by PMS.
Amazing program and waiting for update.

^ Agreed on how awesome PMS is. I used to use TVersity which actually worked just fine with regular XviD files and such. But PMS totally blows it out of the water.

They come with firmware updates.

Most of the formats are currently supported by the PS3. I think only MOV's are incompatible on the video side.

Some video types don't show up when on a thumb stick but they will play if you can get them on your system. Using a media server such as PMS is the ideal way. If you have a router use a media server such as PMS.
