USA His Girl Friday 3D Blu-ray (1940) [Region Free] [BD-R]

The eyepop-3D release arrived today. IMO the conversion is excellent working with pristine elements. The bonus Superman cartoon has beautifully restored Technicolor in addition to the 3D conversion. I heartily recommend this release.

We live in an era when a Hollywood classic that wasn't filmed in 3D can be converted and sold in 3D blu format, while a classic that was filmed in 3D, for whatever reasons, cannot be sold in 3D blu....

If only WB, Sony and Disney would get with the program. C’mon, guys. We want to buy your product. Please sell it to us.

Look at this another way please. If a public domain title like HIS GIRL FRIDAY can be converted to this degree of excellence it may be a blessing to the enthusiasts among us to support efforts like these. The major studios obviously don’t care for our patronage. With the exception of the 3D Film Archive getting Kino Lorber involved I don’t see anyone else providing quality movies for our 3D TVs.

My girl and I watched this over the weekend and loved it. Classic film obviously, but the mild-to-medium 3-D is very well done and very much enhanced the proceedings, and now I can’t imagine going back to 2-D for this one. But the real surprise treat was the bonus Superman cartoon, Mechanical Monsters — the 3-D conversion of that is PHENOMENAL, medium-to-medium-strong throughout with some strong shots, tons of depth and some negative parallax too, almost looks like it was originally made in 3-D. Yep, it looks THAT good. And then my order of Fleischer Superman Cartoons 3-D Volume 1 showed up and the other three converted shorts look just as good. Order both of these titles immediately if not sooner.

So, Phil, please please PLEASE convert the rest of the Superman cartoons — I definitely can’t go back to 2-D for these after experiencing your amazing results!

Bizarre title for a 3D conversion. I had to make sure I read this thread title correctly, but if people are happy with it...

I really had no idea what people were going to think of the Superman cartoons but so far the response has been incredibly positive. So consider Volume Two a go.

It’s public domain, and it’s an absolute classic, works for me!

There are so many great public domain titles that I’d love to see rendered in 3D. Some titles have even undergone restoration work despite the iffy copyright situation. Examples I would like to see include Fred Astaire in ROYAL WEDDING, Gregory Peck in ONLY THE VALIANT,Burt Lancaster in VENGEANCE VALLEY and Gary Cooper in MEET JOHN DOE. HIS GIRL FRIDAY is an outlier for Eye-Pop as it isn’t a low budget horror film.

I would say that, were our EyePop friends to consider another classic PD comedy, a great candidate would be 1952's Son of Paleface; it's among the closest films of the era to a live-action cartoon and thus a potential spot-on 3D upconvert.

I could be wrong but I believe Bob Hope’s estate owns SON OF PALEFACE and currently licenses the rights to Kino Lorber. A wonderful idea though. Any Frank Tashlin movie would lend itself to 3D

Firstly, reviews and feedback on His Girl Friday have so far been positive and I'm glad that people have been enjoying it!

But let me be super frank about other classic comedies; almost certainly not gonna happen. Getting a film converted to a reasonably high quality standard and then fully authored into a distributable 3D blu-ray is a huge amount of work.

The net result in this case is a disc released almost a month ago that is still miles from breaking into triple digit sales. This is a niche within a niche within a niche where a classic comedy with a 99% RT score starring Cary Grant will be lucky to scrape past the 100 sale mark in 2-4 months. If I didn't have a huge passion for 3D there is just no way I'd do any of this. The net profits before taxes on His Girl Friday are probably around what I make in one day at my 9-5 job. The financials on these releases are grim and I'm not sure people understand how few are sold. We measure sales in tens folks.

Not trying to be complainy. I'm glad I converted this, I'm even more happy to know that (a few) others are enjoying it, but the time commitment is realistically not sustainable.

Hi Phil3D,

On behalf of all us less than a hundred who had the pleasure watching His Girl Friday in 3D, we thank you for your passion and glad the project at least didn't leave you in the red.

I think the challenge we face, and especially in an already shrinking market, is we are effectively a niche within a niche stuck between ultra-protective "purists" who openly disparage/denounce the conversion of films which were not planned/shot in 3D (which we produce) and others who really are only interested in the latest blockbusters (which we don't produce).

Based on Phil's current sales of a (superb) film like "His Girl Friday" it simply appears there's an even smaller market for this than there might be for some of the typical B Movie fare - it's tough to generalise on sales from a month or so though, but I think we're starting to get a little better comprehension of the market - or lack of.

Even our current Kickstarter for the equally marvellous "Carnival of Souls" appears to be struggling in comparison to the level of backing we were able to achieve for the likes of "House on Haunted Hill" & "Last Man on Earth" - maybe The Bubble has already burst on these small indie conversions? I really hope not as personally I'm so proud of these conversions and think they (mostly) give these films a second lease of life and equally bring them to an audience who may never have considered watching them.

Agreed, the company manufacturing the discs (Kunaki) really needs to get their shit together regarding the international shipping so as to quit hurting EyePop’s sales.
