These updates are getting weaker & weaker. I signed up when Benjamin Button dropped to 13.99 thinking it was a sign of things to come. Maybe that's how they get ya, it got me. Not saying those 2 are bad movies but I was expecting newer titles. It seemed at one point they were swapping 10 movies each week which was awesome, gave people a variety. The last couple of weeks it's been 2-3.
Disappointing indeed. |

thats actually a really good point. cuz cost wise it works out to about the same. only diff is timing. when they did pre-orders at that price they sold TONS. now its just whenever theres a good promo going.

+1 i can't remember the last time i ordered from ch...or any online site for that matter. BBV and Rogers constantly have 2 for 30 or a large % off previously viewed movies. not to mention local craigslist, etc.

2 for $30 only works out to $16.80 each for me with tax
CH $13.99 works out to $17.90 with tax and shipping for me. BBV or Rogers is definitely a great price, but for only $1.10 more, I get brand new, usually English only covers (big plus for me), and all the discs (how many discs is the rental version of Watchmen missing?). Personally, I've pretty much limited my BBV purchases to stuff CH doesn't carry like Summit Entertainment titles. |

I rarely buy titles immediately upon release anyway, so having to wait a little while longer for CH titles isn't a big deal to me. The trick comes in judging whether a title will be available on CH at all (for cheap) or whether to just get it PV while I can, so I'm not stuck having to pay full price. KM |

I've bought a few from Rogers and BB used but most of mine come from Columbia House. If CH doesn't carry something then I hunt around everywhere else. |

I'm trying to think about this from both sides, rather than just from a consumer's perspective.
How can any company succeed where it's competitors fail? 1) Lower pricing This is a big draw for CH Canada because retail stores very rarely offer titles released within the last two months for $13.99. 2) Larger assortment Is this even possible? CH Canada probably has arrangements with certain distributors only. No Disney. No imports. Certain studios just aren't carried. 3) Offering unique products This doesn't really apply. It would be too costly to have steelbooks or collector's editions that are unique to CH Canada. 4) Speed of service Shipping times have improved somewhat. It takes around a week for most titles to arrive. 5) Availability of products I feel we are kept in the dark on this. The site does not show which titles are in stock. Shipping updates are not always sent. 6) Customer service There is a live chat option for answering questions immediately. One of the strengths of CH Canada is its willingness to interact with us and listen. People such as SavvyGuy do a great job in the forum. 7) Quality of products Not relevant as all blu's are sold new and are standard in any retail store. 8) Promotion I received a newsletter yesterday for the first time. Other short promotions such as 24-hour free shipping are occasionally offered through this site, twitter, or elsewhere. Now let's think about why any of us use CH Canada. The main draws for me are: Low prices on titles released around two months ago Free membership Only having to buy two titles in a year Relatively low shipping costs if I just want to order one title Convenience of ordering online/shopping any time The negatives include: Somewhat uncompetitive pricing on older titles Uncompetitive pricing on box sets No Disney titles Limited range of titles offered in general Waiting a week for an order to arrive Inconsistent shipping updates Web site has no information about stock levels Movies with 3-discs cost $5.99 to ship! Why does CH Canada lose business to competitors? Retail stores generally offer greater selection We can get our purchases the day we buy them We have the option to watch a new movie on release day No shipping costs if we visit a store Some stores offer price guarantees Some stores offer unique products Less hassle to return products Less likely to purchase a damaged item as there is no shipping Online competitors often have free shipping if you spend around $39 Online competitors may have loyalty schemes Some online stores anticipate release dates and have faster shipping Competitor sales Some members are happy to buy used from Rogers or Blockbuster How can CH Canada improve? It's unlikely that the assortment of available titles will increase due to distribution rights. Improvement could be made by showing which items are actually in stock. It does cost money to send out packages. It would be unreasonable for us to expect CH Canada to eat those costs. But it would certainly be reasonable to introduce a permanent free shipping threshold (maybe $39) and to do away with the ridiculous $5.99 shipping for a 3-disc movie. How many people pay that? I'm happy to pay $5.99 for a box set however, just not a regular sized case. If regular shipping costs $1.99, and two regular movies can be shipped for $3.98, why can't a 3-disc movie at least be shipped for $3.98? How to compete with stores that sell used products? Here's one idea: Rogers and Blockbuster do not immediately sell new movies used. People are prepared to wait for the lower price. CH Canada offers most titles at $13.99 eventually, yes? Typically 8-10 weeks after release? Why not add a second pre-order option. You can either pre-order at $23.99 and get the movie sent on release day, or you can pre-order and have the movie sent 8-10 weeks later for $13.99 (state the exact time if this is introduced and send the order in anticipation so that it is received on the agreed date rather than a week later). This would encourage people to lock in on a pre-order rather than buying used. CH Canada can obviously make a profit on $13.99 movies because that is part of its typical promotional setup currently. By locking in at the $13.99 price and waiting two months, the buyer is assured of getting the movie new, and at a good price. It's less likely that he will buy elsewhere, used, or in a sale. More promotions. Perhaps introduce a scheme that allows the buyer to add any movie for an additional $13.99 when he spends $50, or $70, or whatever CH Canada deems to be a fair threshold. This would encourage more sales. Have one box set on sale every month. Make this genuinely competitive. For instance, charge $13.99 per movie in the set, then add $5.99 shipping. So The Bourne Trilogy or The Godfather would be 3 x $13.99 + $5.99 = $47.96. Or perhaps combine this option and make it available any time for buyers that spend over $40 or $50 on the rest of their order? Send out $5 coupon codes for each $100 we spend. Any discussion or feedback from the members here or CH Canada would be appreciated. Anyone have any other ideas? I admire CH Canada for trying to do something different so I hope that we can make it work. No company succeeds by standing still. |

+1 on everything Steve said. Some specific comments: Quote:

Other than that, the "$5.99 for 3-disk sets" policy has got to go. This is a major deterant for me unless I happen to want to order 3 titles at once, which rarely happens nowadays. I can see how this policy would be reasonable for boxsets, though. |

wow, i think everything that needed to be said was done so by steve and mark. i can say the one thing i encountered was the 5.99 shipping. i was ready to wait it out and buy day the earth stood still from them for 13.99 (whenever it went on sale) but then the $5.99 shipping and i said forget it. i can pay the same price and get the movie from blockbuster 2/30 and i did. sure i would have liked the special features disc, but its not worth an extra 6 bucks. as for everything else... lets just wait and see how they work things out.

A great big thanks goes out to all you guys - you're all making me seem superfluous. A special call out to Steve46 for that amazing summary (posting #516) - wow, talk about thorough. This is the kind of stuff we have been trying to do here for some time with only some wins. I've taken a copy of the complete posting and have forwarded that to our Senior Management team - it's much stronger coming from you than coming from me - well done and I'll keep everyone posted. We've been able to move the bar but there's a long way to go as Steve46 notes!! Keep up the feedback - it really helps
