I think it's the same with most forums sadly. Certainly the photography forums I took part in were similar, and we would usually come across one or two threads where a bunch of us would have regular friendly chats, even occasionally non-photographic topics, but there was none of that toxicity that was plainly visible in other threads.

I dabbled in photography years ago, I bought a Nikon D80 with attachments, including a zoom lens. I joined a forum but most members were quite critical, without offering any advice. Around six or seven members constantly reminded them that I was a beginner, but they didn’t want to know. Those members helped me, but in the end it was a pissing contest, with my amateur attempts getting ignored. Horrid forum and I quit after two years, making sure I let people know how I felt, and thanking those small amount of members who offered advice and hints. They did say my photos were improving considerably, but they were getting scoffed by members who posted (admittedly stunning) photos, for saying so.the helpful members even said they were ashamed of the others and said they were considering quitting themselves.
I carried on with the hobby for a while, but eventually lost interest.

I don't do as much photography now as I used to, but I was one of the few who still used a film camera (I have all my film gear even after all these years). There's a film and darkroom photography forum which I still take part in, and the others are pretty much digital forums of which one of them I occasionally post on. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I found the film forum members far more willing to help than digital forum users.

Yep, pretty much like that in some cases. Occasionally you'd come across a photographer who couldn't accept you could use both formats, it had to be one or the other. I've no idea why. Most of them, myself included, used both. I worked with film since I was still at school, and I started using digital many years after, but I still continued to shoot in black & white and did my own developing. Unfortunately I hardly do anything these days.

Edit: Misread quote as meaning 'Film vs digital' rather than 'Film>digital' as in 'greater than'.

Similar here in the UK. The major supermarket chains have virtually stopped selling any physical media. Until fairly recently, some would stock the latest releases, but never really anything from boutique labels. Thankfully we still have high street shops dedicated to selling CD's and DVD/Blu-rays, although nowhere near the number of stores from, say, 20 or 30 years ago.

How have your media habits changed over the years?

I can definitely name a few shifts over the years.

I haven't done theaters since 2020.

I used to buy products the day they released but the gap between release day prices and sales has become massive over the years.

I used to buy collections and resell the duplicates mostly taking advantage of the Disney vault to grow my Disney collection. I really haven't sold much since Disney plus launched. (hasn't been very worthwhile buying or selling)

I no longer buy old Warner bros titles since they started expiring digital copies.

I buy a lot more anime over the years.

They haven’t, apart from buying more UHD.

I wouldn’t even wipe my ass with digital codes.

Do you toss your digital codes? I used to just leave them in the package but figured why not redeem them. I now have over 230 digital copies (that were already included with movies I bought) on Fandango, formerly known as Vudu.

I wonder how many 3d enthusiasts switched over to 4k when they got burned?

It's not greedy, it's just trying to make their Profit Margin. How much do you think it cost to make a Quality 4K UHD? Target is getting out of the Disc Market, and probably WalMart will follow. Discs are a Niche Market, and they will make less and charge more. Don't be surprised if the price for a Quality 4K UHD reaches $50!

Well, those prices are typical for niche labels (Vinegar Syndrome, Synapse, Severin, etc.), but not for mainstream releases.

I saw the stats for last week's physical disc sales and UHD 4K discs were at 10%, which I believe is the first time that they've been at double digit percentages.

4K UHD discs have achieved a weekly format market share above 10% many times and at least as early as 5-19-2018 (10.4%):

4K UHD discs achieved a 20% weekly format market share as early as 8-17-2019:

4K UHD discs had two consecutive weeks with a format market share above 30% (31.4% and 32.9%) in November 2023:

I wish that I could fix them all, but I just can not do it.

Also, the format market share reports took their sweet time in showing figures for 4K UHD as a distinct format; we don't start seeing separate figures for 4K UHD until about 2018. This is the earliest format market share report showing 4K UHD as its own format that I could find doing a quick search of that thread:

I would rather pay $50 for something that I really own (and in superior quality) than any cheap price for something that I do not.

In the real world here are 5 4ks whose total is under $50:

For years I stopped going to theaters because a nice theater was an 80 mile drive and too much trouble to try to organize with others. My local theaters have flat floors and a screen way up high so folks can see .... it's not good.

However, I went for Deadpool 3 and The Substance and both were fun. I'm at a point where if I think I need to avoid spoilers or if I'm just excited about a movie before release it's worth going to the theater.

I have never bought a box set to break up and resell. It was tempting for box sets I only bought for one movie but I have never done that. I just figure they know this is such a good movie it should cost $200 type of thing.

I'm not buying as much as in the past but I am enjoying upgrading previous purchases when they are re released with a better edition.

Yeah, they went in the bin. Things are very different now in the U.K. digital copies ceased to exist a couple of years ago. Maybe if movies anywhere existed here, I would have saved them for family, but they would have to watch on their laptops or tablets because we never had a viable option for tv, not that it remotely mattered to me.

As Vilya says, sales well over 10% on countless occasions.
