Default Conclave (2024)

Quote:
The pope is dead. The throne is vacant. Conclave is only in theaters this November, starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini. Watch the trailer now.

From director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting a new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church.

Just saw the trailer for this in theaters today. Looks great. Even in that 2 min trailer you can tell the cinematography is going to be top-notch.

I hate that films I want to see don't open in my town.

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Boys in the boat
The apprentice
Am I Racist
Return of the Jedi
Godzilla minus one
and now Conlave not showing any upcoming listing.

The casting of an actor (Carlos Diehz) no one has seen before on screen, as a cardinal no one in the conclave had heard of before (Benitez), was a clever "meta" choice.

I was intrigued by this story throughout. I wondered about the re-watchability of this movie after leaving the theater, now that I know how it all unfolds. I don't have an answer for myself yet, but the performances from all actors involved will draw me in for a second watch.

Unfortunately for all its suspense, it telegraphed the ending early on. Almost the entire movie was simply not so subtle misdirection.

Maybe I've seen too many movies.

I found this surprisingly intriguing and compelling... until the ending just made me roll my eyes and drop my rating by a half-star.
It's not predictable, I'll give it that. I thought I knew where it was going, but instead they brought in a pointless twist that was never even hinted at in the rest of the film.

Ralph Fiennes deserves an Oscar nomination, though.

well, PART of the ending was super predictable from very early on. If you say you saw the whole ending coming, you're lying. They never even hinted at it.

I saw this today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fiennes in particular does great work and now I'm intrigued to read the novel, as well. I had doubts that a "religious thriller" could be pulled off with no adult content, and while
[Show spoiler]the US PG rating is clearly an attempt to court the portion of the audience who won't see PG-13 movies, the film is somewhat genteel, even if the same content devoid of religious trappings would still undoubtedly merit a soft PG-13 (the film is classified 12A / 12 in the UK and Ireland and PG in Australia).
Still, there isn't anything here to kick up a fuss over and the restraint used is admirable. That the film is so satisfying regardless obviously recalls classics Hollywood films, where emphasis is put strongly on acting, plot and script to offset the lack of salacious content.

The film has a Dolby Atmos audio mix (there is a logo for Dolby Atmos, but not Dolby Vision, in the end credits) and significant subtitled dialogue in Latin, Spanish and particularly Italian (there are also a few stylized title cards in English), so hopefully, an English-friendly 4K UHD release happens with the film's original Atmos audio. Unfortunately, Focus / Universal only have this in the US and none of their US-only titles seem to have gotten 4K UHD releases from Universal, though some have come after the fact from Universal as MOD (and The Holdovers is coming from Shout Factory). It's similarly grim for the UK as the distributor is Black Bear UK, who seem to only release on Blu-ray in the UK. The Australian distributor is Roadshow, so I don't see much hope there unless there is a US and / or UK release. An Italian (Eagle Pictures) or German (Leonine) release is a distinct possibility, but would it / they have the original Atmos track and English subtitles for the non-English dialogue? Unlikely, I should think. Anyway, I live in hope that this excellent film will get a 4K UHD release, so I can enjoy repeat viewings in the best possible presentation. I had to settle for one of the smaller auditoriums today and the presentation was more than a bit dim compared to seeing the "bigger" films in a Dolby Cinema presentation. All the reds should look glorious in this film.

Pretty much my reaction too. First two-thirds were captivating and the performances all around were on point...ok, maybe Stanley Tucci rocked back and forth a little bit for me but eventually settled into his role.

The final third went from corny to predictable to a screenwriter's novelty twist. I'd recommend the film for a fun thriller-ish two hours at the movies but I certainly couldn't take it any more seriously than something like Terrifier 3 Probably hovers around a 7 out of 10 for me.

PS I'm not religious at all so those who are not agnostic/atheistic may find the dramatics more impactful.

The books twist was wild, I’m assuming they kept it in the film then based on remarks here.

Can’t wait to see it.

This is more or less where I landed. I loved the process of it all and was thoroughly invested and then the absolutely out of nowhere “twist” was incredibly eye rolling for its pointlessness.

A part of me was thinking it would have went on to show that
[Show spoiler]Lawrence was actually somehow behind everything and manipulated his way into power.
. I’m glad they didn’t do that but it would have been a more way to end it than what they gave us.

Well acted film. The end twist was unnecessary and didn't add anything to the story IMO. Basically shows how people are corrupt and will lie and cheat to get what they want regardless of how pious they are supposed to be.
