That scene is also in the 151 minute version -- no need to suffer the 3 hour cut to see that scene.

I love that this scene deals with how everyone has some vanity, you just need to learn to control it. I love the advice Jor-El gives to Kal-El here. But most of all, the moment when Jor-El essentially says that he wishes he could his son in his arms right now, and he could have if Krypton hadn't been destroyed by stupid vanity really, is very touching. The emotion in Brando's performance is palpable, same for Reeve's.
It is all included in the 2001 Special Edition.

Ah, but they don't show Jor-el "waking up". We hear his voice from outside the FoS before it goes to the inside. Why they chose to remove that extra 5-ish seconds is beyond me. It's not like the special effects were bad when he opens his eyes.

I always wanted to edit this sequence to use in my fan edit of Superman 2, as a way to show that Jor-el is OK with his son breaking the rules of interfering with human history. One thing about the Donner Cut I hardly hear people mention is how this topic is never addressed.

Granted, my edit didn't really amount to much since it's harder to edit the dialogue in a way to make the context of what they're saying "work".

- You...interfered with human history.
- I don't know what to say Father...I guess I got a little carried away.
- Very well...so be it.
- Thank you Father.

Yeah, not really enough to make it work, lol.

*EDIT* Though now that I think about it, it's always possible that I could use those snippets as either flashbacks intercut with Superman thinking of their conversation while doing something else and just show a couple of shots of them talking in the FoS.

It's a nice scene, but probably shot before Reeve's look was finalized. His hair in the close ups doesn't match the rest of the film.

Certainly not as bad as the screen test footage that what used in the Donner Cut, lol. I remember seeing an edit somewhere someone made a while back where, since their edit had Lois jump out the window earlier in the film, they wouldn't be using her jumping into the water. So they edited the pink bear scene in a way to make it seem like Lois was embarrassed about calling out to Superman when he flew away ("I'm sure it was something very important Lois", so the context still works). However, it certainly wasn't enough to push Supes over the edge (or, over the bear, lol) to subconsciously do something to give himself away.

Was just thinking myself that this would have been a great beginning for Superman II. Would love to see what you can do with it.

Question regarding standard Blu-ray Disc included in the 2023 SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE 4K set:

Does anyone know if the standard Blu-ray Disc included in this SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE 4K set is derived from the master used in the 2011 Superman Motion Picture Anthology Blu-ray set or is it the same as the 2006 Blu-ray disc? I understand the standard Blu-ray Disc included in the 2023 4K set was not derived from the this newest 4K master.

the picture issues on superman the movie. it seem some TVs and projector cant translate it HDR. I had the benq th575. it had trouble translating the early scene. I recently got the benq 2060. It can do HDR and it works much better on Superman the movie.

The Blu-ray included in the US 4K set is the exact same disc of the theatrical version as was in the 2011 Anthology set.

I believe the UK 4K set instead includes the 151-minute Special Edition on Blu-ray, but I'm not sure if it's the 2006 or 2011 disc.

Is a new remaster getting released just wishful thinking or is there an actual indication it might happen?

Do you know if that applies to both the 2018 release (that has the 5.1 audio on the 4K disc) and the recent release (with the 2.0 audio on the 4K)?

I'm sorry; I really don't know.

Maybe someone from the UK could help?

I see it nowhere else in the movie and it quickly disappears on the following close-up of Reeve flying and smiling. Here's a photo, THE EXPOSURE IS BEING GREATLY EXAGGERATED TO CAPTURE THE EFFECT (the shot is actually much darker than that) but here it is anyway:

. Again, I can only think that's it's been mastered too brightly like the other shots with the visible mattes, but unfortunately even lowering the black level doesn't help in this case. Those vertical bars are NOT there on the SE and theatrical Blu-rays either when viewed on my TV, I checked.
Not sure if anyone else has pointed it out, but sadly the black vertical bars are also very present during the opening Krypton shots of Superman 2 the Donner Cut.

WB really needs to fix the many issues on this set. But sadly it's not gonna happen it seems

With James Gunn’s Superman coming in July I could see them releasing new versions in the lead up.

More than likely they would be the EXACT same discs. I don't see WB re-doing the master with the correct OCN footage that they supposedly found or releasing the Donner Extended Cut of "Superman: The Movie."

Probably just repackaging at best.

I don't think the "no interfering in human history" bit works in any edit, particularly. The original intention was for the Fortress of Solitude to implode as a result of Superman turning back time, thus removing his last ties to Krypton (and his parents). I think the story was that, for budget and time, Donner couldn't make it work. I'm sure someone else can chime in with the correct story.

That might have made a great emotional payoff, even if the whole idea doesn't entirely make sense (isn't Superman interfering in human history anytime he does anything with his abilities?), and the three Kryptonian prisoners are still around. Clark surrendering his powers and then getting them back through what amounts to a cheat code isn't narratively great, either, but that does make for a great emotional payoff.

Believe me, I love the first two movies, but they have a few ideas that don't hold up to internal logic, even for fantasy films. If, post nuclear strike, Lex Luthor owns a great deal of West Coast real estate, it shouldn't take the Feds and the CIA long to add two plus two and get four.
