Can I just ask why you can't just change the HDD's over?

I've got about 200GB on my 320GB 60GB machine. Why can't I just vacate the one in the slim and put it in the 60GB machine and vice versa?

The PS3 will automatically format any new hard drive you put in (even if it has been previously formatted to the PS3 format). So if you take your drive out of 1 PS3 to put it in another all the data on it will be lost.

But fyi, if you remove a hard drive from your PS3 and put the SAME ONE back into the SAME PS3, it won't format it then. That's the only case where you won't lose your data.

Interesting. So a backup/restore is absolutely necessary.

What a waste of time aye. It would take me ages and I would have to use the same drive that everything is already BACKED up on. Meaning i've got to move the PS3 data to the backup drive which almost everything is on anyway and then move to another PS3.

I suppose I could just delete all the photos/music/video from the PS3 before backing up. This would speed up the process right? Then I can just copy the music/video/photos from the backup drive to the PS3 after the restore.

That's what I did. I took off all the stuff i didn't need anymore and put all my music/videos on my laptop then backed up what was left.

It was actually a pretty good way to clean up my HDD as I had lots of stuff I never used anymore on there.

If you make a back-up file and it has protected content in it like LBP dlc etc, is this back-up file still usable on the new PS3?

Does it give an error that the PS3 slim isnt able to use the backup file?
Or does it problemlessly put all the data on the PS3 slim and ignores the protected content (by not putting it on PS3 slim)?

Or does the new PS3 not accept the back-up file at all (with or without protected content) and I have to manually save all my saves etc to an external hard-drive?
