Likely because even for a forum this small and insular, the people who do security here probably don't see the need for any sort of tailgate or pregame for when that disc hits, considering the last Cameron releases. (this title being the best of them)

It'll probably get unlocked when actual caps of either a stream from the new master, or the disc, get out. Someone will rush over and post those caps in a new thread, they'll merge it with that thread and unlock it, and away we go.

This is a very long topic and I would like to check how the discs are labelled in the US edition. Would anyone have photos by any chance? Thanks.

I finally watched the Special Edition on UHD.

Some dated VFX shots aside, I'm amazed, AMAZED!, how modern, in the good sense of the word, The Abyss feels as a movie and the slick, almost digitally shot looking image only strengthens this impression. It's a great looking disc and while yeah, like many of you I would prefer it to have the original, intact grain structure, I highly enjoy it for what it is.

It's easily the bestest one I've seen of Cameron's AI-enhanced catalogue. Googly eyes and the occasional outright DNR'ed shot aside, if most remasters in general looked like that I'd be quite happy.

It definitely looks more natural than Titanic; the true HDR grade AND all those dark interiors with a lot of purposefully placed (back)lights are definitely more forgiving to the degraining than Titanic's fake HDR and plenty of well-lit scenes.

Only yesterday I actually checked who the Captain Kidd Brewer Jr was and learned the sad story of his suicide. What a handsome, charismatic guy he was and shame about
[Show spoiler]his character not making it to the end of the film.

Exactly, yep. I still like Titanic's UHD but the enhancement does a bit too much, like bringing out the joins on Billy Zane's syrup.

This may speak to my own mental sickness, but this made me laugh so (too?) much. This is gonna carry my entire day now.

...

Also, anyone else think that "Billy's Syrup Joins" would be a great name for a rock band? No? Just me? :-|

For years I had nothing but the ugly old non-anamorphic DVD, so to have anything on the shelf that's watchable on my OLED feels a blessing.

Sure, but there's no need to damn it with some rather faint praise, it really does look verr naice regardless.

This movie is where I feel like Cameron firmly established his footing in pioneering/making movies that stay relevant & even ahead of their time

It is also his last interesting movie (at least the extended cut).

If only someone could confirm the Special Ed's 2.0 track was the original 1992 stereo mix I'd probably have given it a try already... hell, I'd buy the Blu-ray if the 5.1 track was the 70mm 6-track mix.

Why don’t you get it and confirm for yourself, seeing no one else seems interested?

IIRC it was confirmed in this thread?

Because money. If there's no OG track I won't keep the disc. Some people are happy either way. Also - and this is crucial - I don't have a 4K drive.
