Inspired by this thread I fired this up on my PS5 for the hell of it last night. I reinstalled offline to make sure that everything was on disc and that there were no updates. Yep, all of the DLC is there. I went looking around on PSN. Strangely, there isn’t any DLC at all. I checked Steam and the movie skins aren't available, but the classic skins, weapons skins, and art/soundtrack dlc are.
[Show spoiler]Renewed impressions after a couple of hours: It’s difficult to describe how bad aiming is in this game. At times it feels like the game is phantom nudging the crosshairs away from enemies. Because of the above post mentioned ‘every weapon is projectile based’ and the enemies run around like a bunch of low-level multiplayer bots, auto aim makes things worse. Enemies have aim bot accuracy though. Burst fire weapons are physical pain to use, my god. I recommend choosing the weaker character (players are paired with an AI in single player stages) and letting the AI co-op partner blast away with their stronger weapon. They aren’t perfect, but I found they do a far better job in close quarters skirmishes. Movement is competent at least and characters have unique doge moves like rolls and dashes with cool down after use.
The aesthetic is very PS3 ported to PS4 and levels are mid PS2 corridor shooter affairs with some open areas thrown in for circle strafe fun. I remembered the game to be running at 60fps, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It looks like 30 with heavy motion blur. Performance is as good as it can be at 30fps on PS5. Assets and textures have that Unreal Engine pop-in from the PS360 era too.
I would be interested to hear from someone on the development team. There were obviously some fans of the original show involved. There are lots of little Easter eggs like Snake Eyes’ disguise and Roadblock’s chef outfit. The voice work is surprisingly well done and most of the cast is doing their best to evoke the old 80s Sunbow actors. Except Destro… what the…
Enjoyment will be highly dependent on the player’s tolerance for jank and legacy 3rd person shooter tropes from over a decade ago. Being a fan of the property does some heavily lifting here. For the best experience I recommend playing through on the easiest difficulty to unlock a few cosmetic items and the modifier cheats. This will help fix a few things like bullet sponge enemies. Turning on piercing rounds for the players, explosive enemies, and more frequent ammo drops and playing the game on medium or normal difficulty actually feels balanced. The player isn’t overpowered and hordes will good down quick while higher level enemies and bosses are still a challenge. There’s no penalty for using these, so why not.
The campaign can also be played in split screen co-op, which is a novelty these days. The battle mode seems like it could be a fun random trash shooter to put on with friends over.
I didn't realize the DLC wasn't available on PSN/Steam/eShop. I see "Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow Movie Skins" on Xbox though, is that the bonus DLC? It is the only thing not included in the deluxe edition.
