It's not, the US cut is better and Kubrick never had a preference, he only created the European cut in an attempt to boost box office intake outside the US. The scenes that the European cut takes out were scenes that made the movie feel more complete and flow a lot smoother. The European cut is faster paced but you lose crucial character moments and certain plot devices
[Show spoiler] (like Danny's erratic behavior later in the movie goes unexplained in the European cut)
. Plus the way some of the fades were edited out was quite crude and annoying.

I personally think it's a good thing that the US cut has since become the default, it's clearly the most complete, most cohesive, and most satisfying experience between the two cuts.

All they need to do is release it as a steelbook with the OG video art like they're doing with Willy Wonka and I'll double dip

The 5.1 track is messed up and isn't how the film was theatrically. There's a comparison out there somewhere but I cannot find it, I'll have to dig.

Did not say there is an issue with the master, it could just be better encoded than it is. And of course include the original theatrical audio.

The 5.1 track is mostly faithful to the original, it's really mostly just the minor song miscues that are the issue, outside of the occasional added reverb and minor wind sounds. Still 0 excuse to exclude the original mix though, I guarantee you if this release instead occurred in the last couple of years it'd be included, same for Full Metal Jacket.

I meant the old video art, but that would be most welcome also. This was my favorite:

WB can deliver what they advertised originally. Both cuts in 4K. Not all of us are bowled over by the ghost story. Many of us prefer the more ambiguous shorter cut.

I wouldn't mind the longer cut if the skelintons were not a part of it...

I just think the longer cut drags. Pretty much nothing cut from the Euro cut is essential. It's mostly additional exposition. I've never cared for much explanation in my horror.

Ambiguity is king for unease.

Also, the transition from Jack pulling the fuses from the radio directly to Hallorann on the plane is perfection. So much smoother and more effective than an additional scene of him talking to the guy.

Then again, I've never been a believer that "more is better." I loathe the extended cut of Halloween with a passion, and find most "extended cuts" to be utter tripe that just bogs down pacing for marketing purposes.

I was Team Euro for the longest time but I've warmed up to the US cut quite a bit. You're absolutely right that most of the stuff trimmed is just exposition bits, which is my #1 gripe with most extended versions (they take longer just to say the same thing, or stuff that's easily inferred), but when I watched the shorter cut again I found myself missing a lot of it. Halloran isn't even introduced in the Euro cut IIRC, he just turns up during the walk and talk around the hotel. And instead of the extra scenes feeling like it padding it's more about establishing the bland domesticity of their situation, so when the horror kicks in it actually amplifies the dread.

I get that, and I don't think the US cut is bad by any stretch. I just find the Euro cut to be a brisk, tense experience. The US is tense as well, but it's so long and a bit less tense for it.

When I watched the shorter one it didn't feel differently paced at all to me; it's just missing stuff. And it's stuff I missed missing!

The shorter cut doesn’t have:

Hallorann introduction
“Dan, did you get tired of bombing the universe?”
“Danny’s not here, Mrs. Torrance.”
