This is probably the same logic behind the Dimension version of Project A removing Sammo's first fight due to it being over a mahjong game.

Did anyone else’s set come with scratched discs? Both my 4K and Blu Ray both have scratches in them and they have played havoc on my Panasonic 820.

This 4k disc is fantastic. My only complaint is the subtitles. They need to be grey for HDR movies, otherwise they get way too bright and light up the whole room in dark scenes. A rookie mistake which makes the 4k disc unwatchable. Luckily it comes with a great blu-ray (Same transfer)

The 4K disc ”Ran” is a good example of colour and opacity for the subtitles of a HDR presentation. This is so important when a label from the UK releases a non-english spoken movie. Subtitles will be mandatory for 99% of viewers and the ones used on ”fist of legend” will hurt your eyes and ruin the experience. I can't believe 88films missed this.

Correct. The picture quality is fantastic, but the subtitles are extremely bright in HDR and will ruin the experience completly. However, you're in luck if you own a Panasonic player, it's the only brand on the market that allows you to adjust the luminance of subtitles.

Criterion is the worst in that regard. Kino made the same mistake with their early 4K releases but not anymore. Criterion, on the other hand, had no such problem with their early 4K releases but somehow decided not to give a sh#t about subtitle luminance at some point. I'm not sure exactly when it was, but at least since The Last Picture Show (released in Nov 2023, the first time I noticed this problem), every Criterion 4K HDR release I've seen shared the same issue. Eventually, I gave up hope that they might come to their senses and just bought a Panasonic player.

I watched the UHD a few months ago and didn't notice the subtitle problem that the other member did.

The subtitles are considerably brighter on the 4K versus the Blu-ray, so I can understand how someone sensitive may notice the difference. Especially when the 4K isn't artificially brightened like the Blu-ray, I think that may contribute to this perception of "bright" subs.

The 4K is a significant upgrade. Whoever said the uptick from Blu-ray to 4K was not noticeable may need to recheck their TV setting. The color grade is much more nuanced, and the costumes and the sets feel more textured.

That said, the Blu-ray is no slouch. I'm just comparing the two for those on the fence.

Overall, this is a beautiful presentation and hats off to 88 Films.

PS. The Top Menu trick worked with the Region-B Blu-ray on my Region-A Panny.
