Default So, I think I want a new receiver (replacing Onkyo 804)...

I haven't been happy with my Onkyo 804 since I bought a PS3.

Apparently there is some sort of defect in the 804 that does not agree with 1080p signals via HDMI on the PS3. This has been confirmed by Onkyo, and they'll fix it, if you pay to ship it to them (expensive... it's heavy) and then they only quote "2-10 WEEKS" for turn-around time.

Up until now I've only owned Onkyo receivers (with the exception of a Kenwood back in the day, but we won't talk about that ). But I've read a lot of lackluster reviews on their receivers lately, and I am losing confidence.

Ideally, I'd sell my 804 on Craigslist or eBay for around $300-400 (based on recent sales) and maybe invest $200-$300 more into a new receiver.

I've read good things about the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K, and it's in my price range, but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

I think you would find the pio 1019 a step backwards in terms of receivers. This VSX-03 or Marantz 5003 would be more along the lines of your 804.

EDIT: Here is another one you could look at Denon

Thanks to all for the suggestions thus far. Please keep them coming!

I should also point out that I only have the living room wired for 5.1, and our "open floor plan" prevents a 7.1 setup, so that's not a huge concern for me. Ideally I want a quality receiver, with relatively easy setup, that has lossless audio for Blu-ray, and won't break the bank.

I wish I buy a preamp/processor system than A/V receiver.

OK well the 790 is the same as the 1910 which is available, Denons aren't exactly easy to setup... You may really like the Marantz, overall its a very good receiver and probablly one of the best in the $600 range.. I hear they are easy to setup, its what I want to get next. Otherwise look into the Pioneer Elites.

you could always wait for the reviews on the new x07 onkyo's - they look to be a step up on the x06 models from last year - you could also try and hunt down an 805 - there are still a few around - that thing is still a beast 2 years after launch!!

My confidence in Onkyo is a bit shaky right now. Even just on these forums there seems to be a lot of "Onkyo [insert model #] please help/problems/WTF/not working". I know that's a lousy barometer, but given my current circumstances I'm at least willing to try another brand at this point.

I know someone said it was a step down from an 804, but the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K has such stellar reviews and doesn't seem to be lacking anything the 804 has that I actually use, it's at the top of my list right now. But I am still researching, so that may change.

I know I said the 1019 is a step down in receivers from what you currently have and I say that with all due respect so that you get the best buying information I can give you. Last years Pio 1018 was a beast.

Why I am cautious about the Pio 1019 is that given what was so good about the Pio 1018, Pioneer changed and made a unit that was in a 3" smaller housing and weights 9.5 lb less. The loss of Pre-outs is upsetting and it appears they changed the amp too, they now use the PHAT amp that was in last years lower end models.

By no means am I saying that the 1019 is a bad Receiver. I briefly heard it and I think it sounds good. I am sure as far as receivers in the sub $500 range it is pretty good. I am just saying that you have a good powerful receiver in the Onkyo, the Pio may not be what you are used to.

Therefore I am suggesting you look into other options as well like the Pioneer Elites and Marantz in your price range.

Gotcha. And thank you for the advice. I've personally never owned nor heard the output from a Marantz receiver, so I might need to do a store demo somewhere. Then again, Amazon does have that nifty return policy...

I second Callas' advice. The 804 is an excellent receiver, and its unfortunate that you have had problems using it with the PS3. Don't let this experience define Onkyo though. During the time when that receiver was released several other manufacturers had just as many problems with the PS3. This was not in any way isolated to Onkyo.

Most people who like to trash Onkyo mostly complain about the heat. I have a 605 myself and let me tell you that I have a whole host of other components that easily exceed the heat output of that receiver. In fact I've pushed that thing for hours on end without a hint of excess heat. That's not to say that some models don't run hotter than others, but let's be real here. If Onkyo had so many overheating problems as some would insist then they wouldn't sell nearly the amount of receivers that they do. These things are designed to run within a range of temperatures, and Onkyo does not have a reputation of failures. I think most people who complain are putting their receivers in very tight spaces without proper ventilation.

As Callas stated that Pioneer you are considering is a good receiver, but it is indeed a step backwards...a pretty big step backwards in all honesty. The 804 was built like a tank and has loads of power. I just don't think you would be doing yourself justice by going with the 1019. The Elite is more up your alley. That Marantz is also a beast of a receiver. The difference in build quality with those two receivers is dramatic when compared to the 1019. The 1019 has nothing on the 804 in regards to build quality either.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger this morning on the Marantz SR5003 from Amazon. $562 after my corporate discount, and it should arrive Friday. I'm looking forward to it!

The Onkyo 804 is currently on Craigslist, looking for a buyer.

I agree. I also own a 605 that still does a fine job for the price paid.

Congrats on the Marantz purchase Sylin. I'm sure you will be very happy. Most Marantz owners are.

I owned a 605 as well before my current receiver, and it never gave me an issue once. I even sold it to another member here, and it is still going strong to this day!
