Looks pretty fun. I think as long as it doesn't take itself too seriously, it could be quite enjoyable and elevated from a generic slasher. A tough line to toe, but I think Thanksgiving did it pretty well. We're really checking off the holidays in terms of slasher movies. I'll eagerly await the bloody Arbor Day and Flag Day flicks. Uncle Sam seems overdo for (another) horror movie.

This should be a hit and Heart Eyes should become a new horror icon like Art and John Carver. |

Dumb title, but a pretty fun slasher in my opinion. Maybe not super original, I guess, and maybe a bit too much romantic comedy stuff for some people, but I liked the two leads and while it's not overly gory there are some pretty good well-timed gore gags. AMC was giving out a little sheet of 3 Valentine's cards, so that was a fun little bonus.

Three and a half stars
Sparks are in the air as soon as Ally and Jay, played by Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding, first lock eyes in a haphazard way at a coffee shop. Unfortunately for our love-at-first-meet-cute protagonists, blood splatters are also in the air, because they have been targeted by the Heart Eyes Killer, a ruthless knife-wielding serial murderer who has been eluding authorities during a multi-city reign of terror for the past few Valentine's Day holidays. Two detectives, played by Jordana Brewster and Devon Sawa, are hot on the trail, but even they may not be able to save Ally and Jay from becoming gruesome additions to the diabolical villain's body count candy box. Valentine's Day has always thrived hand-in-hand with slasher cinema, as especially evidenced by My Bloody Valentine (1981) and Valentine (2001). The 2025 genre offering, Heart Eyes, directed by Josh Ruben, may not be the most original of the bunch, but it earns considerable mileage from the fun-spirited likability of its two leads and from a handful of creative gore sequences. I also enjoy how it never misses a chance to aim its sharply-pointed Cupid arrow at some of the more annoying recent vestiges of modern romance, namely “epic” marriage proposals, holiday consumerism, diamond company greed, and, of course, the titular heart eyes emoji. This film never quite decides whether it wants to be a horror movie or a romantic comedy. Fortunately, that narrative disconnect gives way to a few excellent belly laugh scenes. I thought this was really fun, it was predictable and had a lot of comedy/slasher movie cliches (kinda the point though, in some ways it’s a parody film) but great energy and a bunch of good laughs. Expect more of a comedy with gore/light jump scares than an intense slasher movie.

This was equal parts rom-com, slasher, and satire. Really enjoyed it and I'm sure it'll have frequent viewings in February for years to come.
