Spike Lee's remake was slated to come out/go on Apple TV in spring, so a May release of the original on UHD makes sense.

I'm just hoping they pair it up with another Kurosawa film release like Stray Dog which BFI did, but not holding my breath. Just hoping Criterion throws out as many Toho films as they can while things seem going well between the pair. Samurai Rebellion, The Bad Sleep Well, Under The Blossoming Cherry Trees, and the Hanzo the Razor trilogy would be on top of my list.

I know thing son the Channel are indicative of being released physically. But it would be a shame if they didn't release Ruben Ostlund's early films: The Guitar Mongoloid, Involuntary, and Play.

I've also been dying for Cristian Mungiu's R.M.N. The rest of his work on the label and at the very least I could see Janus Contemps doing it.

George Feltenstein at WB was teasing in the latest Extras podcast that one of their licensing partners (a.k.a. Criterion) has some of their A tier silent movies and to expect something quite soon on that front.

Does anyone know if the Amazon prices for Criterions typically reflect the 50% discount during the flash sales? I've noticed that they are almost always half off during the big Barnes and Noble sales in the summer and fall.

Amazon does not match the flash sales. I’m guessing it’s because the Criterion flash sale is only 24 hours as opposed to the lengthier Barnes and Noble sales.

I am thinking he's referring to The Wind and The Crowd, at the very least.

Man I’ve just given up on Criterion doing anymore new to Blu-Ray Japanese titles, and have instead joined the BFI train becoming an importer instead. I’m kind of done, and given up any hope of Criterion doing anymore Kurosawa, or Hideo Gosha new to Blu-ray titles, and instead have jumped on the BFI train. Sometimes, it’s best to follow another label when it comes to certain titles you want.

Problem with Hideo Gosha, is that they have the rights for both US and UK. So nobody is releasing them in English friendly releases unless it's Australia. Hunter in the Dark is the ONE film I would import.

There is a youtuber named Bushido Blues who recently did reviews for Hunter in the Dark and Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron, and made me realize how much I also love Bandits. It's Gosha's longest film at nearly 3 hours. Sigh...not sure we'll ever see a BD of that one.

Well if imprint ever puts out some Hideo Gosha with their imprint Asia sub label I know exactly what I’ll be buying. With Akira Kurosawa minus Seven Samurai it will be with BFI. Everything else will be from Arrow, Eureka, 88 Films, Film Movement, and Radiance Films.

One possibility could be a Von Stroheim triple like the Von Sternberg and Tod Browning ones with Greed, The Merry Widow, and The Wedding March. Blind Husbands has a new restoration that will probably come from Kino or Flicker Alley, Milestone is working on Queen Kelly.

Thanks, I'll go with City Lights and Goldrush for now.

I definitely feel that a (or some) Von Stroheim release(s) are definitely the most likely. Whether a Triple Pack or Individual releases. Greed (1924) and The Wedding March (1928) in particular I can see happening. The Merry Widow (1925) is odd because the Austrian Filmmuseum restored it and on both 2eleven's arte CINE CONCERT website and San Francisco Silent Film Festival Pages make no mention of Warner. However, it did have a WA DVD release way back when, so maybe Warner did their own in-house restoration of the film? We'll have to wait and see!

Sources to both 2eleven and SFSFF:

https://www.2eleven.de/the-merry-widow.html

https://silentfilm.org/event/the-merry-widow/

Blind Husbands (1919) was also digitally restored in 4K by the Austrian Filmmuseum, also my personal favorite Stroheim in terms of restoration. Genuinely fantastic stuff! Though as you stated, that's a film I see Flicker Alley and/or Eureka releasing. I am also quite interested in Milestone's release of Queen Kelly (1929).

The Crowd (1928) is a definite possibility if Warner did a restoration of the film. It would make sense given how liked that film is. That and Warner Silent Film restorations are practically unknown about until either a BD release or TCM airing.

The Wind (1928) is possible if Warner did their own restoration of the film or found a way to get the rights to MoMA's restoration. Though I doubt the latter seeing the restoration of the film was completed/first shown in 2024, the year the film became public domain, which should mean Warner has no involvement/say/control over the restoration. I feel this is only cemented seeing the film festival pages I see about the restoration make no mention of Warner, at all.

Links to Hippodrome, Ritrovato, and MoMA Re: The Wind (1928).

Curious if Criterion got any of Warner's Lubitsch films like So This Is Paris (1926). I am also curious if Warner restored Lubitsch's 1927 masterwork, The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg. If I'm not mistaken, the MoMA-Lubitsch restorations are with MoMA and Warner has no say in those specific restored films. Especially The Marriage Circle (1924), seeing that was digitally restored way after the film became PD.

Going back to Victor Sjöström, I am REALLY curious if Warner restored He Who Gets Slapped (1924) and The Scarlet Letter (1926). That would be an amazing surprise!

Either way, as Watershipdownisgood has stated, we have some massive silent releases incoming and I couldn't be more excited!

I just want to pop in and say, that new 40 minute interview with Joel and Ethan Coen on the No Country For Old Men 4k is absolutely outstanding, as enjoyable as revisiting the movie itself.

As for the film, that final scene hits a lot harder as a 38 year old me than it did when I was 19. What a masterpiece.
