Hong Kong League Of Gods (2016) [No 3D Blu-ray] [Digital only - AVP]

Just back from seeing League Of Gods in 3D. Three idiots came in ten minutes into the movie and then left after another ten minutes but otherwise I was the only person in the cinema watching it, which is always nice.

I don't think I have actually watched a Chinese/HK film theatrically since Full Contact and Hard-Boiled way back in the 90s, they just don't get much of a release in the UK. This one was released by Sony, so I hope they follow it up with a 3D blu ray, because this is most definitely a film to watch in 3D.

It's a conversion (credited to Gener8) but not a bad one at all, I find Chinese conversions are getting better all the time. As you'd expect, it's mostly depth but I did spot quite a lot of mild and medium pop out with the odd strong moment (most notably a Doctor Octopus type tentacle comin' right at ya). Separation was decent. The film is overloaded with CG, so is a perfect fit for 3D. The camerawork is exceptionally dynamic, and you get a lot of variety on screen - there's flying scenes, battle scenes, giant monsters, baby monsters, magic, flying fortresses and all manner of insanity. It reminded me of Gods Of Egypt, Clash Of The Titans, Lord Of the Rings, Curse Of The Golden Flower, Mermaid, Avatar, Monster Hunt and more, all mashed together. I was in fantasy film heaven - I just can't get enough of this kind of stuff, especially in 3D. It is a mess of a film, but a glorious one.

What's the downside? You don't get a lot of Jet Li and just like The Evil Cult the film doesn't have a proper ending. I was really enjoying all the action at the end and actually shouted out in frustration when the end credits kicked in, this had better damn well get a sequel...

Here's a US trailer, it's not the best edited trailer but shows a few scenes:

I really hope this gets a 3D blu ray, and not just in Hong Kong, this kind of stuff is made for 3D...

Thanks a lot 13thman for the detailed 3D review. Sounds very promising and if it lands in the US for 3D theaters, I'll definitely see it. The movie looks fun and you're right about the CGI being great for 3D.

The BBFC just passed a 2D only version for home release so it's sadly looking like Sony aren't going to bother releasing this on 3D blu ray in the UK...

Still no hope for a 3D blu-ray anywhere worldwide? Since Germany just released Mojin The Lost Legend on 3D blu-ray (in steelbook packaging), I keep holding out hope for an eventual 3D blu-ray release for League of Gods and Journey to the West. But given the current climate for 3D, it doesn't seem likely to happen.

Just watched that trailer again. It looks promising for the theme & action, but too bad to hear it's possibly not going to be offered in 3D. I would be surprised if this gets a wide release in the US even in 2D, and 3D I can't even imagine as a possibility unless it's a mainstream release in theaters. Most limited releases only get 2D from what I've seen. Oh well.

I'm glad I made the effort to go see this one in 3D.

I was hoping for a Hong Kong 3D release at least but as soon as I saw it listed in 2D only then I figured it's joining the long list of Chinese 3D movies being denied a 3D blu ray release. I blame Sony for this one though there's still a tiny chance it could still come out somewhere in 3D...

You're lucky. It never appeared in my theaters unfortunately.

How did you like the 3D and the movie?

Currently available to buy for $13 or rent for $4 in 1080p SDR 3D in Apple Vision.

I'd love to see this again in 3D, hopefully it turning up on AVP increases the possibility of a disc release.

Apple Vision makes 3D look better than any television or projector, especially with the over 200 4K Dolby Vision 3D releases which will almost certainly never be available on disc.

Virtually unused Vision Pros are selling on Swappa, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay for $1,500-$2,500, which is less than many enthuasiasts spend on televisions or projectors. I bought a 1TB model on Swappa with the official case and two years of AppleCare+ for $2,578, which would've cost me $4,600 directly from Apple.

This film is SDR 3D so no reason why it shouldn't come out on disc. I don't want to buy films from Apple.

It should but probably won't. I think there will eventually be 4K/Dolby Vision/HDR 3D releases on other digital platforms, though.

4K+ OLED VR is definitely the best way to experience 3D. The Pimax Dream Air, XEO BIG, and Shiftall MeganeX Superlight 8K are all expected to ship this year for $2,000 featuring OLED microdisplays with slightly higher resolution than the Vision Pro's and weight under 200g (less than a third of the Vision Pro's weight), and the XREAL One Pro 1080p OLED videoglasses are $600.

This 100%. I don't want to give apple $4k for a solo viewing experience when I usually watch 3D films with others on a 110" screen.

Whomever thought up proprietary routing of all 3D films to the AVP should be canned.

I’ve no issue whatsoever with 3-D films being available on AVP. But, exclusively on AVP with no 3-D Blu-ray? HELLZ NO WITH THAT SHIT, they can eff right the eff off.
