I got it and watched it immediately! I'm surprised there is no reviews yet. I'm not a reviewer, but I can certainly tell everyone what I saw.
So, for the colors, there was no push toward pink in the whites (like the AE disc) and no push towards green (like the Kino 4k master). Now I know there was a slight, ever so slight push toward blue in the whites on the original Kino disc. Early in the film, we get some nice shots inside the house (a beautiful house btw), and it has to be one of the most beautiful "black and white shots filmed in color" that I've ever seen, because of the color timing in the whites. The sun coming through the windows give such an amazing warm tone (slight brown/yellow) that counteracts the cold walls (slight grey/blue) all within the wide shot of the interior. I couldn't help but love the cinematography of this shot. My shot of reference in this film is the spilt milk. Yes, if you squint your eyes at the spilt milk, you will see a slight cold blue tint, but ever so slightly. Its not teal pushed, its not entirely "blue" it just has a colder temperature to the white. My only issue is some of the blacks look a tad crushed. The two men wearing black (or navy blue) jackets inside the house are lacking detail and are just a flurry of film grain. Since these indoor shots only have only natural lighting coming from outside, I can live with that. Funny thing is, there are some other shots that have clearer blacks, but much less grain in them. The shot of Alexander walking down the staircase to see his family zoned out in front of the TV is like this. The stairs are black, and its a dark, late evening shot, yet the detail in the staircase looks nice. I don't think its scrubbed of grain, its just a lot less grainy than the other shots. There are also some damage areas. A shot of the kid in his bed, there is a some blue fluctuations in the bottom right corner. That's the only real big one I can think of right now. That being said, I'm not a proper reviewer, I'm not a nit-picker, and that's how it looked to me. I personally think it looks wonderful. I'm sure some people will find something to complain about. Tarkovsky has stated he doesn't like symbolism, but its kind of hard not to take the color of this film as symbolism. The visions of the dystopian future in Alexander's head are in black and white, the outdoor shots of the real world are in full color (green grass and eventually, red and orange), while the interior shots of the house are in color, but not of color. A color purgatory. In his head? Or real? Or possibly a little of both? |

Yeah, I'm going to get this 4K even though the double disc Blu-Ray from Kino was perfect IMHO. I'm in the mood for cyclical nuclear Holocaust subject and existentialism from the Late Tarkovsky plus it's his last film...maybe his best in a lot of ways. Underrated. Nevermind no HDR right? Then just spin the old BluRay for me. Shucks.

It has all the extras from the prior release with the exception that they are now on a Blu-ray.
