Yup. Seeing this now on the Ebay Seller info page:

"What happens if the item is lost while it's being returned?

In general, whoever pays for return shipping is responsible for ensuring the item arrives at its destination. If you paid for the return shipping, you'll need to work with the shipping carrier to try and find the item. If the buyer paid, they’ll need to contact the carrier instead."

So me paying return just puts it all in my lap should things happen in transit.

It's also probably a way to discourage you from returning the item. I mean, they don't want you to return the item, as they would loose money. So this way, i'm sure they get a good chunk of people to simply abandon the return in the first place.
