Huh. Looks like they've just swapped out a few of the language tracks for others, that wouldn't even require a new video encode. How do you know it's a 100GB disc?

I can't confirm it, as I went by this websites info on the version I have. But when I watch, I don't see any difference from the other times I've seen this movie. At least from a brightness perspective

Are there 2 or 3 barcodes on the underside of the disc

Alright, I finally bit the bullet in half and ordered the Japanese version with quite nice slip of the old BD.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/296630483045

It has the DTS soundtrack with higher bitrate and AVC codec with much better grain in places. I can't let this one go, cuz there aren't that many avenues left to getting this version. I highly doubt they ever go back to this timing anyway. With Ebay coupon it was about 40 bucks after 10 dollar coupon on two items, which ain't too bad. So I have now in the 4K era ordered multiple releases on bluray, notably Aliens and Heat with slips. Kinda nuts IMHO.

Had to do it. I just can't really get into Heat without its more original look. Hope they actually do a better UHD transfer of the director's version as well though. It deserves Atmos and a BD100 plus a better HDR grade. I really just dislike how they treated Heat on 4K. Massively disappointing in so many ways.

Vudu and Kaleidescape never showed a 4K HDR master on this title till the 2022 timeframe for Heat. To be clear a # of WB titles got 4K HDR masters on Vudu and Kaleidescape in 2016 only to be released within the last year on physical media, 12 Strong, The Man from Uncle, Vacation (2015), Tag, Game Night, American Sniper, The Intern, The Nice Guys, Focus, Black Mask and Magic Mike. Paramount did the same with 4K HDR digital only releases of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hansel & Gretel: With Hunters only to be released 5 years later on 4K disc. 20th Century Fox specifically had digital only HDR masters of Die Hard 2, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, A Good Day to Die Hard, The Wolverine, X-Men Origins: The Wolverine completed prior to the Disney purchase.

I own 45 20th Century Fox 4K UHD titles; to be clear this does not include any 20th Century Studios 4K titles I own. None of them even remotely look as bad as Heat. This does look very much like a Disney HDR title! A lazy algorithmic computer driven HDR pass. It is scary similar to Pirates of the Caribbean in its dimness. If anyone has been to California or the Caribbean, you know how bright it is. Sunglasses required! The HDR pass here is so poor every scene looks like it was shot 10 minutes before dusk or 5 minutes after dawn with total cloud cover and is totally unrealistic! Even Disney has done titles that have a proper HDR grade such as Pirate of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which looks superb and wonderfully captures the tropical environment for those who have seen it in real life and those who haven't captures its magnificence. The 1st four Pirates films and their HDR grades equally horrid. Dynamic Tone Mapping which should never ever be on is an absolute requirement for Pirates 1-4 and Heat! What was Heat mastered at 10 nits? Not Joking. Of the hundreds of 4K discs I own Heat and Pirates 1 are the worst in regard to HDR grading. Every scene should not look dark! The outdoor scenes especially in California should look vibrant. I did see it in the theater as well and the outdoor scenes did not look this dim or like it was 10 minutes before sunset with nothing but clouds in the sky.

LG 83G2 OLED
Oppo-203
Onkyo TX-RZ920

Yeah, and this is why I ordered an old Japanese transfer of the film looking its best. I just can't understand what the hell they were thinking with this film in 4K. Mann is known to tinker, there is a Reddit thread about Thief right now with muppets drooling on people, but for this one film damn they should have just left it alone if they weren't at least going to do HDR right and put it on a BD100 with Atmos.

I can usually forgive some color timing differences. But they massacred by boy here.

You gotta love this forum. It's either too dark (Heat) or too bright (Inglourious Basterds) Never had problems with both...

It does often depend on how your display processes HDR.

There are thousands of releases. If, according to some, one of them is too dark and another too bright, isn't it something to be expected? Plus, maybe it's not the same people complaining about the other being dark and the other being bright.

I'll be seeing this in the theater myself later next month, and in a small arthouse theater, so I'm not worried about the other patrons. Those of us seated are there to actually watch the movie lol.
