The point I was trying to make is that the reason given for needing a faster protocol was the need for file sizes now and in the future that will be 25gb or bigger. I don't believe for a second that the 25gb number was an arbitrary number they pulled out of thin air. They DIDN'T use 15gb, 30gb, or 51gb. They have Blu on their minds as the standard of the future.

25 is a nice round figure yes, and should hold applications for the foreseeable future.

Intel will sell chips to whoever wants them. They were happy with HD DVD because MS was proposing all of them be Wintel boxes, and a billion intel powered players is very attractive to them.

This is the start of POSSIBLE HD movies on USB ROM devices. Even with existing technology, it would be pretty easy to create a 25GB or 50GB thumb sized USB drive. The existing data rate just can't keep up to create a decent HD picture. Enter USB 3.0

Think about it, combo blu-ray / USB movie drives. Portable movie players not much larger than the screen.

Manufacturing a 25GB drive for the sub $1 an optical disc costs in mass production, well, maybe in 30-40 years.

Point taken, but we know how supply and demand affects pricing. In the 1990's RAM jumped to $40 per MB! Our "nice" over seas friends claimed there was a huge fire at the resin factory used in making RAM chips, and thus they had to raise prices. Yet, in our world of CNN and world wide news, not ONE video or picture showed up as proof. Does anyone remember seeing proof, because I would like to know.

In short, I believe they lied and we are simply at their mercy. When American companies decided to make RAM to compete, prices changed real fast. Other wise they would still be soaking us.

Look at all the recent toy recalls because of dishonest practices by China. Chemicals in crayons, lead paint, etc. You trust them anymore? I don't. They once swore they stopped using lead wicks in candles to make them burn slower. We tested and them, and guess what... lead wicks. Their honesty seemingly only lasts while we are looking.

Ah you missed it, the comment was they were increasing the bandwidth due to expectations of file sizes being transfered over increasing closer to the 25gb size mark.

Consider: the HD personal cams also for further examples of uses of the increased bandwidth.

The USB3 really is more about acknowledging the portable media of the current Tech gen having file sizes significantly greater than the last.

25gb is a very interesting number to be used though, as other mention. That's a single layer BD disc.
