No Drums Along the Mohawk in the Claudette Colbert
I've been waiting for that one to return.

Warner Bros The spirit of Filmstruck lives...

I don't know if the habituals of this thread check the rest of this sub-board, but an important development has been happening since December.

The TCM hub is at long last back in full force on MAX:

This would be a lot more interesting to me if it had everything that airs on the TCM channel (and host intros) like the actual TCM app does. Unfortunately, the TCM app requires a cable subscription to access.

Yeah, I'd too much prefer direct access to TCM+ independently from MAX and from cable, of course.

Still, fwiw one of the movies added this month has a TCM intro, about "One month of Oscars." I skipped it, as I'm not interested in such trifles.

Warner Bros Forgot to mention:

One clear advantage of TCM@MAX over the CC though:

Every movie in pristine HD, no matter how old. No such standards on the CC sadly.

The February 2024 expiring picks I've already seen:

As always, my top recommendations are in bold - but I'm being particularly picky this month, because the truth is, they're ALL good!
  • Almost Famous (2000)
  • Before Midnight (2013)
  • Blood and Black Lace (1964)
  • Body Double (1984)
  • Duelle (1976)
  • Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
  • Fear City (1984)
  • Hairspray (1988)
  • Ladies of Leisure (1930)
  • The Lady Eve (1941)
  • Memento (2000)
  • Minority Report (2002)
  • North by Northwest (1959)
  • Polyester (1981)
  • Say Anything... (1989)
  • Serial Mom (1994)
  • Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
  • Vertigo (1958)

Expiring Watchlist:

I might try to catch the Barbara Stanwyck movies, but most of them seem to be before she really developed into the fast-talking fiery dame we all know and love. Ladies of Leisure, for example, was just okay.

There are a few others.

But to be honest, most of these don't jump out at me and/or I own them and can watch them whenever I want.

Squeezing in a few before the end of the month…

Started In The Folds Of The Flesh a few days ago, got far enough to think I might go back and finish it though I dunno if I should bother…

Probably will also try a few of the longer films, in order of interest, most likely to least likely: The Sleepy Time Gal, Cecil B. Demented (may have watched (some of?) it a long time ago, may not have), Blaze, and if I'm in the mood and have time Terri and/or GoodTimesKid. I could see probably not making it to/through those last two or four…

And I have most of the other longer ones covered one way or another (mostly watched already), so… maybe some shorts if I have any time left. And there's aways my always nearly full dvr…

I went with Cecil B. Demented last night, pretty much as a blind watch it turns out. It was pretty much fun, wild and crazy… Worth a watch.

I've seen some of his other more "recent" films, but haven't quite got around to the really classic ones yet (Polyester and before). Maybe some day…

Decided to give In The Folds Of The Flesh another go, starting around where I left off not quite 20 minutes in. Made it not quite another 10 minutes more and well life's just too short for this kind of junk. Big pass.

So next went with The Sleepy Time Gal which was interesting enough to watch all the way through (I think), it was pretty all right. Give it a shot if it's something you think you might like.

That's probably going to do it for me with the channel this month. Got too many other things to be checking out.

Posting probably too late at his point for various reasons, but I caught Virtue (okay pre-code) and Man's Castle (very good) before they expired, along with the interesting shorts Layover, on the Shore, It's Him, and Grandma's House (with the latter being brief but powerful).

February got ahead of me. I did a flurry of the Nicole Kidman's that were leaving -
the PQ on Eyes Wide Shut was actually not great, so I skipped it. Let's get a spanking 4K out for this one.
I watched Birth, which, like all Jonathan Glazer's films, I did not love, but also could not really fault.
And I watched The Hours, which I've seen many times, but it's great, and it got me all over again.

As for today, I've been on the hunt for a HD viewing of The Killing Fields for a while, so that's easily my new-arrival opener for the month.

That's odd. It looked good to me. But I agree - bring on the 4K!

I was being over fussy I'm sure. Because I'd seen it a few times recently, I was actively looking for striking clarity.

I look forward to watching several of those just before they expire.

Oh well, another new episode of Reacher tonight, if I can even manage to squeeze it in..

So I started out this month with the expiring Thirty Day Princess which I found funny and pretty well done. Starring Sylvia Syndey, Cary Grant and Edward Arnold primarily. Recommended a lot.

Hard to say what else I'll be getting to, but seems like Frenchman's Creek and Monte Carlo could be among them, and likely also Full Moon In New York. Might be in the mood for some horror too… though I could end up more at prime to catch some of its soonly expiring films (with dolby digital + audio, what a concept!).

There is a lot leaving this month. A lot of widely seen titles.
One I caught on the channel recently and would recommend - The Goodbye Girl, for a healthy dose of 70s yap.
Two I'm determined to catch - the technicolor swashbuckler Frenchman's Creek, and the Otto Preminger Angel Face.
