Anyone else notice that Germany and to a lesser extent Italy are now routinely getting 4k releases of US films which are not released on 4k in the US? Seems like the future of physical media is in Europe.

I'm starting to notice a pattern of Germany getting 4K releases of Nicolas Cage films which are not released elsewhere. If the pattern is noticeable just looking at Cage's latest movies, I'm sure it's true more broadly!

In this case, I think I will hold out for a potential A24 webshop-exclusive release before I import the German version. Does anyone want to speculate on what the likelihood and timeline for such a release would be?

Germany Dream Scenario (Nicolas Cage, Kristoffer Borgli, Mediabook Germany June 2024)

I'm glad I waited! Film needs a bit of 4K love.

Like the artwork too.

Based on previous Lionsgate exclusive windows, it can be as little as 1 year or as many as 2-3

The German UHD doesn't have HDR or Dolby Vision.

...it can still look amazing, surely? I'll be buying it unless there's bad reviews.

As we've seen with releases like THE OTHERS and COLOR OUT OF SPACE- Sometimes an HDR grade may do more harm than good.
From film restorationist Robert Harris:
"If a film is shot substantially low key, HDR can do harm."

You consider COLOR OUT OF SPACE “substantially low key”?

I thought Color Out of Space UHD was SDR.

CoS was already extremely garish in its color palette. From what I have heard, it did not need any boost in it's color palette. (Although, like you- I would have thought its colorfulness would make it a more perfect candidate for HDR treatment)

It's up to the Director/powers that be. I love a wider color gamut. But, I am fine with the choice to not use it as well. The overarching reaction from film professionals was that they made the right decision to not use HDR on THE OTHERS. Obviously, both SC and Criterion opted to no use it. (And I think the director was involved with that choice).

I don’t disagree with any of that. Just saying your wording in your original post made the inference that COoS was visually low key, which was a head-scratcher.

I’ve bought the German 4K in an Amazon offer after seeing that this is actually not a Leonine release even though they’ve got a distribution deal with A24. The label that got the film is DCM who in turn outsource their physical media distribution to Leonine. That’s why they’re credited on the back.

The very good news is that DCM seemingly handled the encode as the 4K version looks fantastic. No complaints whatsoever. While I haven’t seen the film yet, I do believe DCM also left the original English credits intact as the introductory "A24 presents…" was not Germanized. It’s a night-and-day difference compared to the Leonine crap.
