I think if he can play, he will. Just because people are speculating only 5-6 more years doesn't mean he won't play 7-8. I think he continues to play until he no longer can physically do it. At 35, he is putting up numbers similar or better than his career numbers. Just goes to show how much this game really means to Jeter.

It's not only about whether he can play or not, but also whether about he can play at the level the Yankees expect/want/need. |

The Yankees are 91-50 on the season. If they continue to play .645 ball they’ll finish the season 105-57. The Yankees are 53-18 in their last 71 games. If they continue to play .746 ball they’ll finish the season around 106-56, closer to 107-55 though. The Yankees are 40-13 since the All-Star break. If they continue to play .755 ball they’ll finish the season 107-55. Realistically I think they finish 103-58 since they play The Angles and Red Sox. I have to say though; right now the Yankees look unstoppable. They only need to go 9-12 (.429) to reach 100 wins. You know your team is playing well when all they need to do is play 3 games below .500 for the remaining 21 games in order to finish the season with 100 wins. They need to keep the momentum flowing. ![]() |

Without Jeter, the Yanks would not have accomplished what they did the past many years. The guy is amazing. My hat is off to him. |

I don't dislike him, I just think he's given too much credit. He sort of fell into the captain role because the Yankees needed something for fans to get excited about, after 3 years of not winning the World Series. I don't have an official source, but rumor has it that Posada is much more of a captain on the team, in terms of getting everyone in line. When Jorge was injured last year, and was away from the team, look what happened. Anyhow, to reiterate past points: I think Jeter will play for another 4-5 seasons, and he's certainly not better than Gehrig. He's not even the best shortstop currently on the team. ![]() |

I feel a bit bad for them, during last night's Sox/O's game they mentioned some stats (which I won't try to quote since I'd probably misremember them). Fenway has been tough on them O's the past couple seasons.
Sox are still trying to hold off Texas for that AL Wild Card spot (there's no catching the Yanks, they forgot how to lose!). Looks to be an edge-of-your-seat September for Sox and Ranger fans. TB is falling too far back to worry me much. |

Looking through the box scores, I saw that Pavano outpitched Halladay yesterday, to earn his 12th win of the season.
That's exactly 3 more wins than Pavano had during his entire run with the Yankees. Yes, I said that right.... in 4 seasons with the Yankees, he had a total of 9 wins (so the Yankees paid him about $4.5 million for each win). |

Haha yes very true... the two of them.
Seriously though, take a guy you can't keep off base who is also great diffensively and then add in a closer who is total lights out... you will win alot of games! Robbie Alomar/Duane Ward come to mind from 1993 ![]() Last edited by hc666; 09-10-2009 at 06:02 PM. |

Posada was the most important player from the current Yankee run of the past fifteen years. Bernie Williams was just as valuable, but obviously his prime and career ended years ago. Closers in general are overrated. No one will ever know, but Mariano might have been much more valuable as a starter.

There's some good talk brewing here.
Louisville Slugger- you fried my brain with all those numbers ![]() I could definitely see Posada taking the skipper job sometime down the road. toefer- Well...not being fond of Jeter is rare but you're entitled to your own opinion. His auto's are already worth anywhere between $300-600...Jeter just wants to win. Him becoming Captain was a huge honor. The last Yankee being Munson. It really wasn't Jeter's doing it was all Steinbrenner. He thought that the team needed a leader and Jeter was first in line. At least he doesn't advertise it like Jason Varitek does. I mean come on...he wears a "C"..no one else in baseball does that. This isn't hockey(waiting for sdon's comment lol). Notice how Jeter rarely gets any negative publicity? A-rod got so much with his whole "wife problem", juice, and Madonna to name a few. Jeter is a quiet guy. However, he's very stoic and even catatonic @ times. Which is why he'll probably never take a manager position. That's how Torre was too. It took a lot to get Torre ticked off and him getting ejected was rare. Girardi has a short ruse and he's been out of the dugout a lot this year. As far as the Pete Rose record...ya it's a stretch. He's got to stay healthy and still contribute. He'll probably eventually get moved to first base, DH, or even the outfield. ...Posada, Mariano, and Jeter are all headed to the Hall of fame. They'll probably be the next in line to get their numbers retired. I'd love to see Paul O'Neill's retired but since he wasn't with the Yankees for the entire run, he'll probably get docked. They gave a rookie his number (21) and the fans booed him lol. Since then it still hasn't been worn since the '03 WS. Clark Kent mentioned Bernie Williams. He's another unsung hero. He did great things over the years. 51 should be retired as well. A-Rod's will probably get retired because of what he's going to do before he retires. Hopefully he can get a ring in the process. Carl Pavano...yes, the worst Yankee I've ever seen lol He pitched 1 game and made 45 million. Last edited by sfmarine; 09-11-2009 at 12:02 AM. |

(4,256 hits – 2,721 hits) / (2,721 hits / 2,119 games) / (1,970 games / 13 seasons) equals about 7.89 seasons or about 7 seasons and 144 games to reach 4,256 hits. ![]() Here's to 8 more healthy years! I am predicting Friday, September 8, 2017. Jeter would be 43.2 years old. Last edited by Louisville Slugger; 09-11-2009 at 12:12 AM. |
