Default PS3 EYE auto generating Avatars

Quote:
Sony Labs has been researching this technology for a while. I think most people are familiar with it from Smile Shutter in the Sony CyberShot, and autofocus with face detection. But now, we've migrated this technology to PS3, and made it available as an SDK.

Through its various points of detection, the system can recognize individual faces and overlay a different model for each person. And that's where things get a little more interesting. Aside from augmented-reality uses, Sony imagines the tech being used to generate virtual world avatars on the fly

too true,

if they don't, it'll be just another silly gimmick as lame as the R.O.B. for the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

We're one step closer to actually being in video games.

That's cool stuff though.

Eye of judgment is an awesome game that uses the Eye that I recently just got into.. and I know my kids can't wait for the Eye Pet to come out Nov 17th that works with the Eye. But yeah more applications would be great.. I can't wait to see what they come out with in spring to use the new Wands with the Eye.. they need a really good game that uses it to come out.

Although I agree that the Eye needs drastically more attention (there hasn't been anything for it worth half a shit since it came bundled with EoJ), there are some big things for it on the horizon.

Eyepet of course is AFAIK still scheduled for the end of the year. Also the highly touted motion controllers for PS3 are designed to work in tandem with the Eye.

That being said, it makes me sad that we can't get past tech demos and the best use for the Eye remains a good bowl and Mesmerize.
