Now most production with a good budget will employ DI - Digital Intermediate - to edit and color-correct the movies on the computer. This DI is then used to make the release print and the HD master.

X-Men 3 is grainy when they shot it in Super35, so the DI (that was scanned from the film stock) is grainy too. The VFX of course has to match this graininess.
