Based on what I just received from 88 with Cannibal Holocaust on 4k, and what I just received from Severin with Four Flies on Grey Velvet, I'd be ok with either boutique punching this out in 4k uhd. Might as well make it a full-blown party and drop Absurd on 4k, too. (OK, I'm being greedy)
Maybe just do BOTH D'Amato Video Nasties as a double bill considering Absurd follows Anthrophophagous & having just checked the info on IMDB I notice it has now become a trilogy with this name only (according to David Flint's review) sequel, made last year, that is being screened in the UK at Premiere Cinemas Romford (East London) on 24th Feb.

The thing that has me slightly worried is the thankfully minor but still distracting print damage visible on the most recent 2k transfers, in the form of color instability and some occasional yellowing/staining, especially during the first 20 minutes. Some of it likely can't be repaired, but perhaps minimized on a 4k resto. Either way, it should be a big step up from the prior 2k efforts. And for folks worrying that a 16mm source has limited detail to garner gains from, the gains won't just be all about "fine detail". Some of my favorite new 4k uhd masters have been from 16mm film sources. Grainfield, colors, black levels, contrast and depth should look truly great here.
16mm, if done with care, can look phenomenal on 4K. I always use the original Evil Dead as a yardstick for how good 16 can look in higher formats. ED just looks sooo good on 4K.

The yellowing/staining on Anthropophagous could be unrepairable. Arrow had a similar situation with Lenzi's Nightmare City (a huge personal favorite), where they chose to release their Blu-ray "as is" with plenty of disclaimers. The negative had lots of problems. Glad they chose to go ahead with it because it's one of my absolute favorite discs, warts and all. Anthropophagous is a classic and needs a 4K!

Absolutely!! We're 100% on the same page. I also love that Nightmare City Arrow release, with the handsome scan of the sadly damaged negative, and that Arrow had the moxy to drop it that way for film lovers. I'd take THAT on 4k too! Why not, at this point. A good 60%+ of that disc looks killer anyway.

I'm not entirely sure... But I believe the 2015 release by 88 Films had a difference in the version with slip-cover and the regular non-slip version. It seems like the insert on the slip-cover edition had the "The Svage Island. Directed by Joe D'Amato" on the bottom, and the non-slip version had a "Plus 42nd street memories" sticker and "Antropophagus. Directed by Joe D'Amato" on the bottom. (note: it's the original spelling 'Antropophagus' without the 'h' and 'u' instead of 'ou' as in the UK spelling which is used above on the art itself). As for "why?".. who knows..

If you like the film, you should consider getting 88 Films remastered 2017 re-release .. or wait for a potential UHD down the line(?)

Update: There's also a limited "vhs-packaged" spanish release containing 'Absurd' as well. However I have no idea what master they used for the titles..

88 Films released two different slipcover versions. They had different insert art.

Is this version uncut?

https://www.rarewaves.com/products/5...g2OS4wLjAuMA..

The description says uncut but I feel it is referring to the 2024 4k restoration; the version in the picture is the 2017 2k restoration, I think.

Just had a look and it doesn't sound like it's "cut" in the traditional sense, but it's missing frames here and there, resulting in it running two minutes shorter than the remaster that came out in 2017.

DVDCompare just says the following in regards to the original 88 films release:

Quote:
Yes - Although the nature of the cuts are unknown (89:51)

I just watched this film(?) for the first time. I can think the only attraction to anyone; is seeing the gore scenes as it's badly shot, badly acted, badly dubbed, no story...need I go on? I love horror films from this time and I'm a fan of some of the better nasties like Zombi but this has no redeeming features I can think of. It's just total crap. It's one of those cult titles that leaves you scratching your head as to why!
