Got my tickets for Mission: Impossible on May 22 in IMAX. Can't wait!

Also broke down and ordered this:

It had sold out everywhere except OrbitDVD so my FOMO kicked in.

It’s just so easy and convenient, agreed.

My most anticipated film of 2025, I have very high hopes.

The Blu looks interesting also.

Someone earlier in the thread posted about where they would assign blame if physical media died out. It kind of reminded me of posts about movie houses dieing with a similar bent towards finding some sort of scapegoat... in a largely capitalist society, there will simply be ebbs and flows to what the people want....

I too can get nostalgic when I watch a scene in a movie that shows people at the video store browsing the aisles picking out their evening's entertainment.... but I know.. that on balance of all the pros and cons, I certainly would not be going back to that mode in any way that would be sustainable for the proprietor given the other options...

Most of us in this hobby have been used to being on the margins due most of our time...I think DVD may have been the only time, in my lifetime, where the bleeding edge intersected with the mainstream...prior to that, I remember buying my LD titles through some sort of Columbia House (?) mail order scheme, which, if memory serves, engaged in some sort of negative option billing setup that I'm pretty sure is illegal under Canadian law..lol..

It was nice, for a short period of time, to be able to go into mainstream establishments and pick up your titles day and date with everyone else... but as the hobbiest has moved on twice now for better tech, the mainstream has stayed put (DVD) or moved in to some incremental uptick in quality (4k streaming) that offers a convenience benefit... The affianado has been relegated back to getting reacquainted with their mail carrier..

I know I can't be alone in my penchant for not commenting on posts regarding our friend's health as I am often prone to saying the wrong thing.

I also know that I'm not alone in being grateful for your updates and further want to convey the fact that it is vitally important that you convey, in your discussions with him, that to a man, we are ALL thinking about him and pulling for him...

Vilya update….

He finally has his surgery scheduled for 6:30 CST tomorrow barring any surprises. He is having Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy which involves a specific type of pacemaker. I suggested he ask for the lighted option so he can tell everyone he is Iron Man. He is still very fatigued with an erratic heart rate along with the other symptoms he has been fighting through, but he is still upbeat and looking forward to putting this behind him.

We talk about our hobby and our group that has called this thread a virtual home for quite some time now, and he truly does appreciate everyone’s concern and well wishes, and is very much looking forward to getting back to us all.

I find it difficult to comment about. It's a heavy issue. So, there's no way I'm going to try to say the right thing whatever that would be.

I hope for the best for all of us.

I think it depends on what the individual is comfortable talking about, even if that means private pms. I know Vilya has appreciated it and I did too.
That always goes for everyone here too, even if it means just getting something off our chests. Us blokes don’t talk about these things like we should, and sometimes a little support, even from people we are online friends with but (mostly) haven’t met, makes all the difference.

So, feel free to pm me at any time basically.

YUP. Purchased a Heathkit Oscilloscope many many decades ago.
Radio Shack used to be 3 minutes from the house. As was Blockbuster.
Purchased a lot from Circuit City and Sound Advice.

We are not left with much to actually touch, see, hear

Vilya update…

Only communication today is positive in that our friend was told surgery went well. I will fill in the details tomorrow when I get them.

Vilya update…

We spoke this morning and while the surgery was successful in restoring a better heart rate, it also revealed some other developments.

At some point within the past 30 days, he had a heart attack. Although he survived it, damage was done to an already weakened heart. The disease he has been fighting has progressed as well, with symptoms of being very weak, shortness of breath, and danger of a more serious cardiac event becoming the new norm. His condition has got to the point where he was told “It is now time to start talking about and planning for a heart transplant.” The logistics behind and cost of are problems to solve, but time is now of the essence.

He had more doctors visiting today, but is not sure when he will be released. Beds are at a premium these days, so they tend to push you out the door surprisingly quick sometimes.

He continues to fight and still has a sense of humor, but understands his back is up against the wall.

He has a few folks who call him while he faces this head on, but we talked about widening that net a bit. Something he truly enjoys is time spent here, and it might be a good thing to hear from some of you if you are up to it. Even a short call putting a voice to a name will help lift his spirits. I certainly understand comments of not knowing what to say within a post, so can imagine some hesitancy with a potential call, so please do not misinterpret this idea as any pressure to reach out. More importantly, he understands as well.

He has been checking in from time to time so will read any words of encouragement, but if you are interested in making a call, please send me a PM, and I will share his phone number with you. I know we represent a few countries within our group and international calling can be tricky and possibly expensive, but wanted to extend the invitation to everyone.

Please also understand doctors and nurses crash the party often, and calls need to end quickly. What I have been doing is texting first seeing if it is a good time to chat.

Hopefully I have not overstepped here, but please know that this comes from a good place and merely want to help a friend.

I'm truly sorry to hear what Vilya is having to go through, and thank you for all the updates you have been posting here.

Even though I'm not really a regular contributor on this thread, Vilya has always shown nothing but kindness to me - not only on the thread itself, but also through PM's. Please pass on my best wishes to him the next time you visit him at hospital and let him know that he'll always be in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

Thank you Gotmule.

My Godzilla minus one arrived with the 4k disc loose. It also freezes in multiple spots toward the end of the film. From a qc perspective 4k really is a failure. It should never have been released without a tolerance for damage that blu rays and dvds have. Then we have companies stacking discs to save pennies on a product that’s already to fragile.

I’m surprised 4k has done as well as it has with its qc problems.

Definitely. They’re having problems with the 3rd layer, specifically. Imagine those theoretical optical discs with 10 ~ 100 layers. You put all your data there just to not being able to access them later.
