That seems like a distinction without a difference. I haven't had cable for well over a decade. HBO Max is the one and only way for me to access HBO content on a subscription basis. They carry HBO's content, so it seems appropriate that they carry the name.

They carry HBO content because WB owns HBO. It's no different than Disney+ having shows that didn't air on Disney Channel. It's all under the same thing. It has HBO's name but operates separately from HBO, and they're not even involved with production the way shows on HBO are except for maybe the Sex and the City show since that was an HBO show.
