With your tastes, here is what I tihnk you might enjoy first:

Super Mario
Zelda
--------------
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction

Metroid
Eternal Darkness
-----------------
Uncharted: Drake's fortune

Mario Kart
Smash Brothers
----------------
Not really the style of the PS3 , but PixelJunkMonsters (PSN) and Stardust HD (PSN) might interest you, and remember to give a look at WipEout HD in a few weeks (PSN)

Resident Evil 4
---------------
DMC 4
Folklore

Got me on a technicality. I never really thought about it, but you're right. I guess I lump all games where you are given a gun and your main objective is to run around and kill people as "first person shooters" but yes, technically, you are in 3rd person.

Hey, all. Sorry to bump a 17-year-old thread, but I figured it was better than creating a new one. Anyway, here's my current dilemma...

I grew up on the games of the '80s & '90s, which are now considered "retro". Quite frankly, I don't care - I still enjoy playing most of them. The last current system I ever bought was the Wii, and I don't think it has an HDMI output.

My roommate has both a PS3 and PS4, the latter of which he uses. But the PS3 is literally connecting dust, with just the console itself and nothing else - no hookups, controllers, or games. I know Nintendo doesn't share their characters with competitors, which is disappointing, but I do enjoy other franchises like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. I also found out about the Batman Arkham games, so those are now on my Amazon list. But otherwise, I'm pretty much clueless regarding the PS3 and its library.

I tend to like adventure and exploration fare, but generally I just want games that make feel good as a player, not vice versa. I'm not into military or sports games, and I can't stand utterly childish stuff (that would be you, Pokemon and company). Otherwise, I'm up for suggestions - anyone got some ideas? Thanks in advance!

Not sure how much I can help, I feel like our tastes don't line up all that well. Obviously there's the big titles like Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, etc. I feel like the Infamous games have been semi-forgotten? But those are also big first-party titles. You mentioned SF & MK, and the PS3 also has a lot of Tekken games. Tag Tournament 2 is a fan favorite, along with 5, which has a barebones HD port on PSN. There's also a remaster of Tag 1 if you can find the disc at a good price. PSN also has some great ports of old Sega arcade games like Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers.

For racing games, obviously there's Gran Turismo. The Motorstorm games are also pretty fun and unique, particularly Pacific Rift. I'm also a huge Ridge Racer fan, and 7 is easily the most fully-featured game in the series and still looks great for being a launch title. PSN also has another great Sega port with Daytona USA, though that was also available on Xbox.

If you want the weird stuff, you gotta check out Tokyo Jungle. Really unique RPG/survival game about animals retaking the Earth after humanity disappears. There's also the Pixeljunk games, which are all standalone arcadey titles with different gameplay. I'm also a big fan of Echochrome, a minimalist puzzle game about MC Escher-esque perspective tricks. And keep in mind that PSN has a bunch of PS1 and PS2 games for download; it's hardly an exhaustive library, but there's some hidden gems and heavy hitters mixed in, especially with the PS1 games.
