Only one has gone OOP so far, the very first one released, Captain Kronos. And that took five-six months to sell out, if you count the time from the pre-orders in November till it went OOP last month.

As that was the very first release of the new incarnation of Hammer, a lot of people probably waited until it was actually out and they could read reviews before they ordered, but it still took around three months after release to go OOP. Add to that, that the limited editions are pretty pricy, which has a lot of the older fans in the various Hammer groups on SoMe waiting for the standard editions instead.

I figure the next ones might go a bit faster, now people know the product quality is high, but I don't think you need to worry about any of them selling out before release. Classic gothic horror, even from Hammer, tend to sell much less than, say, stuff from the 1980s.

Unless they do a much larger print run (they don’t disclose the edition size for each title) I can see when they get to their classic Frankenstein and Dracula titles those selling faster.

Kronos is a popular Hammer title but it’s not an elite title or has the cache of those.

People now know the quality of these releases so won’t be afraid to preorder.

I'm intrigued, Mr T. What's SoMe? I've had a wee search but can't find it. Could you link it? I'd love to chew the cud - or perhaps drink from the bloody chalice would be more apt - with fellow Hammer fans I'm assuming it's a forum?

Not a horror, but has the 1957 war film The Steel Bayonet ever had any home cinema release? It doesn't look like it, it was originally released by United Artists, that would be Amazon now. Maybe there's legal stuff preventing a release. I did manage to see it a couple of years ago on a small TV channel (it might have been Talking Pictures TV), & it's very good, directed by Michael Carreras & in 'scope (he seemed to like that format).

It's a common abbreviation for Social Media, as pointed out by T4ffer. I.e. Facebook, Instagram, Reddit etc.

Not that common, I didn’t know what it meant either but I figured it was an abbreviation for something

I aint heard the expression before either. One lives and learns. Odd when even really short wee phrases get new identifiers. I shall now show off by using SoMe at any available opportunity!

Now up on Hammer Films's news page.

May 23, 2025
Coming Soon: Quatermass 2

It seems like the old aphorism is true. You wait years for an iconic alien threat in 4K, and then two come along in relatively quick succession. Yes! Here at Hammer News we’re delighted to confirm that the next release in Hammer’s Limited Collector’s Edition Range is the acclaimed Quatermass 2 (1957), featuring the return of Brian Donlevy as Bernard Quatermass.

We spoke to Hammer’s Steve Rogers, one of the people responsible for this latest release, about the film itself, its impact, additional material and much more.

Great! But for the next announcement I’m hoping for a Hammer classic gothic period pierce. If they can’t do it because of rights issues, they need to hold off, IMO. Hopefully, they’ll get that StudioCanal that many think they will. That would be hugh, even if it’s only for a few titles, for starters. They also desperately need to strike up a deal with Warner Bros.

Ok, I’m watching the old Warner Archive DVD-R of SHE (1965) for the first time in many years and the film just rocketed to near the top of my deluxe Hanmer box set want list. The best that can be said about the Warner DVD is that it’s uncut and in anamorphic widescreen. It’s watchable, but it’s from an old unrestored SD master taken from a theatrical print, with lots of nicks, reel change marks, and gate weave, and lots of audible clicks and pops on the soundtrack. Needs color correction too. This is a sumptuous film, a genuine epic adventure with an engaging story, a powerhouse cast, spectacular locations, and gorgeous cinematography, and it really deserves a full-blown 4K restoration.

There's no surviving OCN for this one, is that right?

Any improvement to be made over the Shout disc is appreciated.

That murky clip looks the same as I've always remembered it.

But with the boatload of extras and at least a decent transfer I'll likely spring for the deluxe box.

My last edition was on DVD, so this should be a huge upgrade, but since I haven't looked at the DVD for two decades and won't be rewatching that old version the 'wow this looks so much better!' factor will be negligible for me here. But I'm in for all these deluxe editions so I'll still happily buy this.

Surprised they didn't choose a more brightly lit scene to show off the new transfer/resto.

I haven’t seen the film for a few years, but I think it’s nearly all set at night, but there are some decent lit interiors they could have used. I have to say that the clip didn’t look great. If the original negatives are missing, then 4K is just a sales gimmick.

May still have some extra range to work with. 4K isn’t just about detail.
