This movie deserves its own thread, especially with the recent 4K digital restoration of the film by the National Film and Sound Archive, which is currently in select theaters in Australia. (They have also announced they are doing a 4K restoration of Gallipoli):
I've always loved how the film opens like a typical 70's TV commercial, only to take a deliciously dark turn. Supposedly, it was the film that inspired George Miller that he should go off and make his own film based on his experiences as a doctor, called Mad Max. So without further ado, here is the latest 4K trailer and poster to generate more discussion about this underrated film: ![]() Directed by Peter Weir Screenplay by Peter Weir Story by Peter Weir Keith Gow Piers Davies Produced by Hal and Jim McElroy Starring John Meillon Terry Camilleri Kevin Miles Cinematography John McLean Edited by Wayne LeClos Music by Bruce Smeaton Production companies Australian Film Development Corporation Royce Smeal Film Productions Salt Pan Films Distributed by British Empire Films Release dates 10 October 1974 (AUS) 11 June 1976 (US) Running time 91 minutes 74 minutes (US cut) Country Australia Language English Budget $250,000 Apparently (Australian fans only) can purchase the poster and the DVD here: https://www.picnicathangingrock.au/s...hz-stapx-s4ajf You can read about restoration by the NFSA here: https://www.nfsa.gov.au/collection/c...r-young-people Last edited by moviemaker; 02-17-2025 at 05:20 AM. |

Here are some photos of my Japanese Blu-ray Edition of The Cars That Ate Paris and screen shots taken with the iPhone (the actual image quality is much better in person). Removable subs and comes with a Trailer as an extra. Pix below:

Weir didn’t futz with the color grade of this like he did with Picnic, did he?
Would love to see a proper standalone UHD release of this, as well as The Plumber. |
