I agree with those who categorize it as the "last classic era noir film." Not just because of its date, but because it's also the apex of classic noir and nothing that came after would ever equal or top it.

Thanks for the heads up! I would never have thought of checking Walmart for this older set. $22 must be close-out pricing, so I snatched it up. (It's been unavailable direct from Amazon since November and shows no sign of returning.). I already had two of the titles, but I absolutely wanted the other two. At $22 it's cheaper than buying each of the other titles at $19 apiece. And more compact on limited shelf space, too. Last edited by sherlockjr; 05-26-2025 at 07:05 PM. |

Edmond O'Brien was mostly a supporting player, but he did have solid lead roles in DOA, BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND DAWN, SHIELD FOR MURDER, and 711 OCEAN DRIVE, and memorable character roles in THE TURNING POINT and THE HITCHHIKER. Last edited by HenryHill; 05-26-2025 at 07:28 PM. |

I’m more there for Marilyn as far my smoking hotness preference, but I do remember Keith Andes being in a small bit part on an episode of a later season ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and wondering why he never became a bigger star after some early film starring vehicles.

Andes, like Tab Hunter, Doug McClure and other young, moderately talented muscle hunks from the 50s, couldn't get cast in major films in the 60s due to changing industry trends that favored ordinary-looking leading men like Dustin Hoffman and Gene Wilder. He retired in 1980, and sadly, he ended his own life at 85 after suffering from cancer and emphysema. Last edited by HenryHill; 05-27-2025 at 12:49 AM. |

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic (0:52) is a charmingly dated 1990 CBS TV documentary (which celebrated the film's 50th anniversary) hosted by Angela Lansbury. It has not been included on any Wizard of Oz home video release since 2009's 70th Anniversary Emerald Edition. It explores the enduring international legacy of Oz, scenes cut from the film, casting challenges (the studio initially wanted Shirley Temple to play Dorothy), Judy Garland's breakthrough performance, the development of the witches, set design, practical effects, differences between Baum's original book and the movie, critical reaction to the film, the competition Oz faced at the box-office when it was first released... and much, much more. With more interviews and archive footage than could realistically be listed here, fans of all stripes will find something to love, including production details that, by some freakish miracle, aren't repeated elsewhere in the set."
