I wish Arrow would get more of Kino’s releases. Among other things.

Frank Djeng discussing the Shout deal.

As for Shout/Arrow...Restorations will be exactly the same for the main feature.
Not yet confirmed whether extras will be consistent across releases. Artwork/booklets up to each label.

Encoding is the main reason I wait to see what the international boutiques offer. How are the main UK boutiques able to consistently release superior encodes than the US labels when the UK is a much smaller market? They regularly hire Fidelity in Motion. VDMS also does solid encoding work. Even Umbrella from Australia has a few releases done by FiM.

Some of the smaller American boutiques like Flicker Alley, Deaf Crocodile, and Arbelos have hired FiM. What is stopping even bigger boutiques like Criterion, Kino, and Shout from hiring them or companies that are almost as good? And FiM is an American company!

At the risk of sounding really unknowledgeable, when Frank Djeng says, in the above video, that the main feature will be identical across label releases, anything involving the actual restoration (color, clean-up, etc.) is the same, but, assuming each label is responsible for authoring their discs, will they often use a unique encode? If so, how much difference can that objectively make to the final product?

Seems like it'll be the exact same restoration across releases. Each label usually does a unique encode, but sometimes they share encodes.

The quality of the encode is extremely important, though one person may notice things that another person doesn't, based on their setups and their eye for such things.

FiM is a one man operation, there is no way that he could handle 6-7 titles from Criterion, the dozens of titles Kino drops a month and however many Shout is releasing each month plus all the titles he does for other labels. Hell, even Arrow hardly uses FiM except for the occasional UHD.

The Mighty Frank Djeng returns to tease out Shout's upcoming Hong Kong Cinema Classics Releases! - YouTube
For those who don't want to watch the whole video, thought I'd mention some highlights from it.

Frank confirms Hard Boiled should be released before Christmas, hopefully being the next announced title in October. It's currently just down to finalizing the extensive extras.

He's also asked about Tiger on the Beat and while he mentioned it's screening soon in LA (unrelated to Shout), he remains tight lipped on any plans Shout may or may not have with it. He just says that Shout knows all the titles people want and they will all be coming eventually on physical media.

Also worth noting, Frank jumped into the comments to reply to a few people. One asked about Chow Yun-Fat, who Frank confirmed was not interested in talking about any of his old films.

Another person in the comments was saying they'd rather support Arrow for their superior work and Frank replied to them with the following "With me and Brandon being part of this, why do you think Shout is not doing the same thing? Why do you think Hard Boiled has no physical release date yet? Because the extras are still being worked on."

I know I'm probably a broken record at this point trying to convince people to give Shout a chance, but they deserve a chance having made a gamble this big. If those here are disappointed with the results of their early GP releases, feel free to speak with your wallet, but I do hope these releases are amazing. If all that any of us supporting Shout lose from the Arrow releases are fancier packaging and booklets, then hopefully many will still choose to support Shout's releases.

I wonder what the mystery title that is going to be announced at Frank's SDCC panel?

Tiger on the Beat is screening at the New Beverly in a few weeks. I’ll keep my eyes peeled to see if Frank is in the audience

Chow Yun-Fat really became a sad sell-out. Not an outright tragedy like Jackie Chan or Tsui Hark, but hugely disappointing

Ok. Obviously I have not been following what these artists have been doing. What, for example, has Hark done that you consider a sellout and tragedy? I genuinely am interested.

Nice! Man, do I miss the New Bev. I moved out of LA about 13 years ago, but from 2007-2012, I went to the New Bev a LOT.

For any who haven't checked it out, it's one of the coolest little theaters ever and does a lot of amazing Q&A screenings. Would take me a while to list all the folks I met there, but some were even just attendees, like John Landis, who was at a screening of Riki-Oh! LOL.

The upcoming 4K's like City on Fire, Peking Opera Blues, Hard Boiled, etc.. will be wide releases.

Yep, common practice from Shout I've noticed is they only do site exclusives on stuff that they don't think will sell particularly well (lesser known films or ones that already existed with the same transfers/extras). Scarcity creates FOMO and that makes some of these sell better than they would have otherwise.

Thanks to Shout I don’t need to have any self control to wait for the Arrow editions next year. Otherwise I’d shirley cave.

Presumably beamish13 is referring to Hark's extra-marital affair with someone significantly younger than him and/or apparent homophobia and transphobia. Not that China and HK in general have ever had a great track record with views on gay and trans people...
