That’s part of it, and also his shameless paycheck jobs for Chinese Communist Party-approved megabudget films. Chen Kaige is guilty of this, too

Pretty much every major director, producer, writer and actor that still lives and works in HK or China is "guilty" of this. They're effectively forced into the position if they want to maintain any type of livelihood. Not all of them want to or are able to emigrate to another country.

That's too bad about Chow Yun-Fat not wanting to talk about these films. I guess he's too busy doing other things, but at least John Woo is involved.

Either way, I'll be giving all my money to Shout for these releases, for the sole reason that I don't import. Still, I trust that they will be good releases.

Exactly. The tragedy, imho, is that these talented artists have their works influenced/controlled by the government, not anything else said in the OP.

Yeah, I don't think people realise that every single bit of media is now governed by, made under and has to go through government censors before it ever sees the light of day. Even evergreen forum favourite Johnnie To works within those confines and you don't have to look too hard to spot the government propaganda in a lot of his films. Granted he's more subtle than many others, but it's definitely there.

I often wonder if Jackie Chan is actually desperate to get out of the situation he's in, but simply can't because he's such a massive figure in HK and Chinese culture (or is at least used as such by the government), so he just keeps his head down and toes the line.

Oops - politics! Sorry mods.

Jackie Chan likely tried to get some kind of clemency for his idiot, untalented son

FiM has authored thousands of titles. They do hundreds of Blu-rays and DVDs per year. Simple math will prove that that there is no possible way that David McKenzie is doing every encoding job.

Agreed! I also don't import for the sole reason that importing anything into Canada is wildly expensive, so I'll be forever grateful that we're getting NA releases of these through Shout with solid bonus material.

I'm just going by Don May, Jr saying FiM is a one-man operation. Maybe he is wrong.

His name is the only one I can recall being credited in booklets for encoding done by FiM.

Also, if you look at FiM's LinkedIn page, it has just one position David Mackenzie

Nice to see the interview with Grady Hendrix on this. When I met him a few months ago, he'd told me that he recorded something for a bunch of these releases, but naturally couldn't tell me which ones.

Feels funny to pre-order this with the Deathstalker double UHD, but that's what I just did. Would make for one hell of a marathon watch.

Having this new label is a blessing and a curse. A blessing that we're getting 4K restorations of a lot of great Hong Kong classics but also a curse on the wallets of the fans.

Anyone have any advice or tips on going around to getting these releases without having to spend too much? I feel like I'm going to end up buying most of these titles but I want to save as much money as possible as buying all of these with each title being (let's just say) $5 more than what the cheapest I could've gotten it for will add up quite a bit at the end. For the record, I'm asking this because I haven't really bought anything from Shout! outside of 3-4 titles before.

imho, it all depends on how long you are willing to wait to get these. To the best of my knowledge, these are not LEs. At some point, I predict Shout (and other sites) may have a sale on these - but this may be in a year from now. You could also wait to see what Arrow will be charging and import. Again, that will be a year from now. If you want these this year? I think it will be expensive. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the quick response! I think I can wait on most of these and I don't have to worry about having any FOMO like the stuff that Vinegar has (One of my big regrets is not getting The Magic Crystal). The only titles I will probably buy before a sale would have to be The Killer, Hard Boiled, and maybe A Better Tomorrow (May look into the Arrow edition if it turns out to be somewhat better but I need to be more cautious about spending money, especially on titles that I already have multiple copies of). Don't know how much of a discount these titles will go for but hopefully they'll be pretty good.

Arrows prices are usually pretty consistent, around $30-35 for slipcover releases and $35-40 for slipbox ones, at least where I’m buying stuff. So yeah, prices for both Shout and Arrow will be similar. Obviously, Arrow ones will have booklets which Shout almost never does, but we still don’t know if they’ll port over the Shout extras or produce their own.
