Wasnt this an "evergreen" catalog title once upon a time in physical media?

I've given up 99% of my hope of ever seeing this, given they didn't do anything for its 20th and knowing how much WB loves anniversaries. The 1% of hope left is that maybe there's a chance they need Director or cast sign off on a release and they just hadn't been able to get it for the Anniversary. But when I ask "around"...nobody seems to know anything.

And thanks to the idiots at Microsoft, Toshiba, and WB circa 2005-2007...we are stuck with a VC-1 non-lossless sound version of this movie as "best available". What a joke. Yes, I'm bitter.
According to Kino they think The Last Samurai won't be a good seller on the format (yes i laughed as well and got attacked by the kino cult for my input).. I haven't given up yet. Arrow has a good deal with Warner I'm keeping my fingers crossed they can do something with it, If not hoping the 25th Anniversary will be considered. If they balk then its never happening.

It really is idiotic. A Tom Cruise movie with an excellent supporting cast and a well known director won't be a good seller? Whomever said that at Kino should be fired.

And how many Samurai movies have there been? ...People love Samurai stuff. FX/Hulu just broke their own records with 9 million people tuning in for Shogun.

I hope Kino doesnt release it, cause I'm guessing they wont pony up for Dolby Atmos. At least if WB releases it themselves it might possible we get a situation like The Fugitive where they put an Atmos track on it. This movie needs a new 4K workflow and an HDR pass. Then a good high bit rate encode to get all of the detail in the costumes and set design conveyed + a (lossless) Dolby Atmos track.

Any 4K release involving Tom Cruise is a guaranteed success.

Yup it was insane you should click my post history and see where I started the last samurai convo and read what people wrote. Kino insider said there is 50-60 Warner titles that are bigger than the last samurai and mcqueens bullitt would sell more copies. I did pick up the limited to 1,000 vinyl released end of last year. Probably one of the best scores of all time

I'll give it a chance, though, since my library has the DVD. Out of curiosity, what's your connection to that one?
Cocktail is pure 80s fun mate. Another I fell in love with as a teenager. Cruise and Bryan Brown eating up the screen whilst drinking Miller Genuine Draft. Fantastic locations, soundtrack, dialogue and just a great time. Razzie awards mean nothing to me. They got it badly wrong. Cocktail is one of the finest entertaining films of its time. I don’t see how anyone couldn’t enjoy it. One of my top 3 go to drinking films. It is tasty 80s juice!

There is even a cameo by Uncle Frank from Home Alone that is ironically requesting a free drink and being a cheap stake before he was one in Home Alone

Unfortunately, this is probably the closest Cocktail is going to get to a physical release.

Unfortunately, something tells me you are right mate.

I have this version of the Last Samurai from Hong Kong which has Dolby True HD lossless and slightly better picture quality due to better compression.

I haven't seen nearly all of Tom's films, but I do like both Top Gun entries and the Mission: Impossible series. My favorite that he's ever done though, is A Few Good Men.

I only include the US editions (unless the film was only released in one country, in which case I have to include the existing edition).
I updated Born on the Fourth of July with the US version, thank you.

Me too but I will add The Last Samurai though because it's pretty and has a great score and too dated master for all that.

I think it's worth adding those Italian editions of THE FIRM and VANILLA SKY at the bottom, so people are aware of them.

They're not the same discs as the US discs, and the compression is MUCH, MUCH better.

I owned the US editions and rebought the Italian editions, and I know others did too.

The US discs of both titles are garbage, they look like upscaled Blu-Rays at best.

I have the American and Italian 4ks of Vanilla Sky and can confirm the American looks like a crappy Blu Ray compared to the Italian, so happy I made that decision. Let's get some Cocktail going in 4k! Movie is so much fun!
