They basically have dibs on the rest once Sony's rights fully expire.

I'm hoping Toho does a Ishiro Honda 4K set next year so Criterion can do their own version. Maybe we'll get some news after their Godzilla 4K set releases this month. Next year would be Rodan's 70th anniversary and Mothra's 65th so it would be timely.

I've still got the first blu-ray, it was fine the last time I watched it. Not sure I'd upgrade to 4K unless there's something significantly different about it.

Also still mildly annoyed that Criterion didn't do a Reiwa Era Vol 1 with this, Minus One, the animated Netflix trilogy and the Singular Point anime. I'd sell plasma for a set like that.

If I remember correctly the original Japanese 4K of this wasn't considered much of an upgrade over the blu-ray, so I'm curious how this will compare.

I don't think Toho even considers "Reiwa Godzilla" a thing yet like the Showa and Heisei eras. It's a weird time where they're doing a lot of different things without the consistency of previous eras. I think we'll have to wait a few years before we can properly define this part of Godzilla's history.

Multiple official sources have used the phrase Reiwa Era. Though there is inconsistency if the anime titles are considered part of it. A 2022 book counted them, but they were excluded in a display at a recent convention. Toho does typically only count the films they produced in-house so they might not consider the Polygon produced films officially a part of it.

Huh, well dang. I find it hard to wrap my head around the Reiwa Era naming because it's nothing like the ones we've had before. In the last three eras we got movies released on a pretty consistent schedule with a large gap in-between each era, but with Reiwa we've had a lot of starts and stops and diversions. I often forget about the anime trilogy to be honest.

There was seven years in-between Shin and -1. Four years between the Heisei and Millennium eras (less than that if you count the Mothra spinoffs). Five years between RoG and Biollante. 9 years between the Showa and Heisei eras.
Doesn't seem very consistent to me.

If you think about it, with the Monsterverse and anime entries we've gotten a new Godzilla project every 1-2 years since 2014. It's certainly a new era but it's more diverse in media than the previous three.

Their physical media rights to Godzilla 2000 should expire at the end of this year. Streaming/VOD rights will probably last a few more years.

We never got the expiration dates for GaMG-Final Wars, but they may be expiring this year too.

Though Sony's physical media rights to the rest of the films (Mechagodzilla II-Destoroyah, Megaguirus and GMK) was supposed to have expired at the end of 2023, but those Blu-rays are still in-stock at Amazon and a couple of other retailers. They may be OOP and they just have large back stock, since some retailers haven't restocked those titles.

I hope the "restored text cards" just means it mimics the UK release where there is English above the Japanese. That'd be a real shame if they went and did something like changed them all to English.

EDIT: The JP release is interesting w/ subtitles turned on in that they use all four sides for text.

I just watched this - the Japanese disc in my English release. Yeah its crazy how much subtitling there is because you’ll have all the place names and people’s names in Japanese just inside the frame, then the translation at the top of the image, then the subtitles for the dialogue below the Japanese on-screen text (or was it above? Can’t remember). Certainly had to concentrate!

So this is probably coming in August? Or that's just in theaters?

I'm guessing the cinema re-release is August with a 4k home release not until fourth quarter some time.

They specifically mention August 14th being the Cinema re-release. And the Home Release later than that with an unspecified date.

The only thing that kinda ruins it for me is Satomi Ishihara's English. It probably works okay for a Japanese speaker, but an English speaker can tell she's not anywhere near fluent. I want to give it a watch with the English dub, but in the few scenes I've checked out, the acting isn't the greatest. I'm not holding my breath, but I'd love a new dub on the physical release.

You know, if it were one of the cheesier Godzilla movies, I could totally roll with it.

I still love Shin but her part in the story is not as serious as the rest. Stunningly beautiful but probably shouldn't have tried to speak English I do find it interesting that a very common plot point in many Godzilla/Toho movies has a connection to the US in story and/or an actor/actress. Nothing wrong with that but I definitely am curious about it.

Probably just 'cause they've always been popular here. I still remember my dad taking me to see Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster back in the 70s. And watching Godzilla's Revenge on TV.
