Basically it comes down to the master Fidelity was given. Anyone care to venture a guess as to how the master looks based on that YouTube trailer above? Yes, I know it’s merely YouTube, all the usual caveats apply, but… ?

Seems like someone deleted the older 4K thread on this site when the news first came out (Which I think I shared the Twitter post that Umbrella did) but here was the original announcement with the screenshots: Official Twitter Announcement (May 16 2024) Undoubtedly a great upgrade over the original Blu-ray which I have gotten used to all except for the compression artifacts. |

Grabbed this and The Fall since Umbrella cancelled and refunded me my original Fall order.
Had a VIP 1 time 25% off coupon and sprung for the Super Deluxe Wake in Fright because if I got the regular deluxe, my total was 135, with the 25% coupon, ended up at 155 plus free shipping. So all that extra stuff for another 20 bucks! |

I'm getting irritated with so many Shop Pay stores forcing payment in the buyer's local currency. There should always be a choice of either seller or buyer currency. |

Saw the new 4K version at this year's Beijing International Film Festival, definitely way better than the previous problematic restoration, though I did notice few glitches introduced by auto-restoration and minor grain management during some night time scenes. The thing surprise me was the rough audio, heavy noise throughout the film and I hope some more work will be done to it.

I got my regular edition copy in today from Orbit. So far as expected it looks way better than the previous blu-ray edition though that is admittedly a low bar.

My copy's currently winging it's way from the other side of the world.

I think this disc looks fantastic. This was a blind buy for me so I'm not comparing it to any previous release, but comparing it to say Sugarland Express which is from around the same timeframe this is magnificent.
Grain looks as it should. There seems to be good detail in the shadowy "two-up" gambling hall. Look at a closeup of Grant's sweat soaked, stubbly face at 36:09 as he stands near his hotel window. Gritty, grainy, grimy and filmy. Thumbs up! |

Alright for what it's worth I think the 4k is absolutely gorgeous. Looks how an early 70's 35mm movie should. I'm so glad to have one of my all time fave films finally presented in a way it deserves.

I thought I would sample it last night (standard BD), wound up watching through about the first half - been a while since Drafthouse's release so I forgot how incredibly watchable this film is. Detail uptick is incredible, just night and day compared to the previous waxy release, however the effort to reduce film grain shows up in certain scenes, we even get telltale swirly grain fields in backgrounds at points. For a worst-case scenario check out how the underside of Chip Rafferty's hat gets dealt with; it is a frozen frame of grain speckles that follows him through the shot! Low light scenes are the most problematic. Still a huge upgrade over what came before, it would likely take a lot more time (money) to approach these issues on a scene by scene basis. I assume the encoding was FiM, doesn't look like a problem on that end. Wonder who will release this edition in other territories? I assume these minor (newly) baked in issues are not going to be alleviated.

I gather the frozen grain fields in certain shots would also be there on the 4K disc?
